Exceptional 10.0
Beautiful hotel, friendly staff.
The Ovolo NIshi is a great hotel, beautiful lobby and bar, very friendly staff at the reception, free bikes, free mini-bar, great coffee maker. My room was nice, but had no desk, a problem for somebody traveling for business. It was also fairly dark with a window facing an interior garden just above ground.

Painfully Trendy but very nice
The Hotel Hotel (really, who came up with that name??) is an insanely trendy property. Serious Millennials, this place was built for you. Now, that's not necessarily a bad thing, trendy doesn't mean it's not nice, because it's very comfortable. There's a very popular restaurant in the lobby. The food was absolutely amazing. The service, not so much. Perhaps millennials doesn't care about service? My ONLY complaints about the room. The lighting situation. You need some substantial lighting. The room is big, the lighting is so diffused that it's like twilight all the time. Mood lighting is fine sometimes, real lighting at others. And the switches in the room are the WORST. The very kind gentlemen from the front desk who came to my room to show me how to turn on the "please clean my room" light pointed out that the plethora of switches were actually labeled, of course the lighting in the room is so bad, I would need a flashlight to see the labels! He did say that there are plans to replace the switches. Great plan!!

Paint fumes a letdown for otherwise cool brand
I’ve never needed to ask to move rooms in the middle of the night but for my 2nd stay in a week at Ovolo Nishi I needed to. The paint fumes from the newly renovated room gave me a headache, a cough and made it impossible to sleep. So I packed up, took my luggage down to reception (there’s no in-room phone to call reception). I had to explain twice to receptionist why I wanted to move. I didn’t even get a “I’m sorry you’ve been inconvenienced”. While I could have said something earlier, like when I first entered the room, I’m astounded that the hotel didn’t properly ventilate the room after painting it and make sure the paint fumes had gone before renting it, especially when they weren’t at full occupancy. The bed while comfy had limited space on the side to get into it. And the bathroom light shined straight into the room. Definitely not a room for 2 people. But would have been great if it weren’t for the paint - of what type I wonder - fumes. No mention of the inconvenience when checking out so staff at the Nishi don’t seem to be as onto it as at Ovolo Woolloomooloo or Laneways. Another super quick and tasty meal in the hotel bar though.

Ovolo without usual vibe but still good
Ovolo Nishi 1st stay I’m partial to Ovolo hotels after staying at their Sydney Woolloomooloo and Melbourne properties over the last year. So when I knew I was going to Canberra for the first time I knew I had to stay at Ovolo Nishi. Unfortunately though it didn’t come up to the same high standard as the other two. That was obvious early on when I checked in and the welcome just wasn’t the same enthusiastic genuine friendly response I’d expected. It wasn’t bad just functional and a wee bit clinical which isn’t something you expect from Ovolo. I’d booked a smaller room with less natural light/windows than usual (as just me this time) but I knew to expect that, and the room actually felt quite cozy, quite calming, almost hygge and all that. But if you need good lighting to read or plan your activities in Canberra you may find it a bit difficult in the lower level (1st & 2nd floor) rooms. And there’s no master switch in these rooms on the 1-2 floors so you need to go around turning off all the lights which is slightly unusual for a hotel room. The rooms were spotless and attention to detail by housekeeping was up to the usual high Ovolo standard. I didn’t have breakfast in the hotel but I did eat in the bar on my own on the first night and found the bar staff helpful, service quick and the food fine. The bar didn’t have the same buzz as in the social areas in the other two Ovolos, but it was a Monday night in Canberra. Location was good, can walk to attractions & good eateries
