Excellent stay! Highly recommended
We stayed in a family room. It was very large, with two queen sized beds. The bathroom was also huge. Service was excellent, the room was clean, and the location couldn't be beat. We'd definitely stay here again. My only suggestion is that you should have the name of the hotel and address written in Japanese since some cab drivers didn't seem to know it. As others suggested, it might be best to take a cab from the train station if you have luggage although there are several buses that stop right by the hotel. I am so happy that we found this place - it was perfect! We were two adults and two younger teens.

Fair hotel stay in Kyoto
We had a fair experience with this hotel in Kyoto. The nearby neighborhood looks a little old and rough but it is not so bad. It is actually conveniently located by a shrine that you can walk through at night and was quite pleasant. Also, there is a nice and busy street nearby with many shops and restraunts if you are up for the walk. The hotel itself was quite expensive for what you get. You must also pay extra for parking and breakfast. The breakfast says "Japanese and Western style" but it is not really Western. We did not enjoy the breakfast so much but made do. The bedding and pillows were quite uncomfortable. There was only one pillow on the bed and it was a very uncomfortable one. Room was very small but that is typical of Japan. The service was very nice which is always my experience in Japan. Overall, I would only recommend if you are booking last minute and not many options.

I booked at the last moment as there were no rooms available in my more usual hotels. I was pleasantly surprised: room was clean, service friendly. I did not try the restaurant, but there are plenty of good places to eat (and things to see) in the neighborhood.

Hotel Sunline Oct 2014
This is my second review in 6 months. (second stay in 7 months) The first review was a bit of a rave as I gave them some leeway as they were new. Still major problems with WiFi....always seemed to be people in the lobby complaining. The staff tried hard to please but despite what appears to be a large number of westerners (mostly Americans/Brits) staying there, there is little English spoken by the front desk, (they try) making requests difficult. No air conditioning despite weather in the low 80s ( windows make the rooms much warmer...we were on the east side)when we asked we were told heat was the only option. Location is good...close to Gion and Shijo dori as well as bus stops. A bit of a trek to the subway but a pleasant walk. Oddly the staff could not make any restaurant suggestions.....they didn't know the restaurants in the area and had to puzzle over a map for awhile until they came up with a place quite a distance away. Pillows were Japanese style...filled with some sort of bean, very hard and uncomfortable. Again for a hotel that caters to quite a few westerners they may want to review the bedding. I would stay again for the location and if the price was a bit more commensurate with what we received.
