The Black Lion, London
Just Okay
The hotel was clean, but small and uncomfortable. The sink in the bathroom was so tiny I couldn't even spit into after brushing my teeth without hitting my head. The room was dark and felt like one of those hostels in New York or San Francisco. The area wasn't the best, but it did have a lot of different restaurants to choose from and many stores with groceries that stayed open pretty late. The staff at the hotel was friendly and it was nice to wake up to a free breakfast every morning. The restaurant/pub was cool and the food was good. I would only suggest this hotel if you can get for $80 or less and if you're only staying there for one night. Also, I'd only suggest it for a young couple who enjoys having a pub downstairs where it's easy to get a good beer.

The restaurant is very charming from the outside and inside as well, but the hotel entrance has no appeal whatsoever. Although staff was kind and helpful, the hotel is lacking in cleanliness to some degree and the bathrooms are tiny. The stairs going to the rooms are also problematic, but part of being an old building. The underground is fairly close by.

Road noise and heat means NO SLEEP
The hotel is quite quaint and the bar and food were excellent. There are two issues with this hotel which make it a horrible place to stay in the summer. There is no air conditioning or fan so you have to have the windows open. The problem with that is the road and location means that there is CONSTANT noise from traffic and people all throughout the night and into the morning. Either you sweat like the Dickens and get no sleep or you hear massive amounts of noise and get no sleep. Either way, you get NO SLEEP. During the winter months, I would imagine that this would not be a problem, but during August? Stay away.

Bed Bugs!!!
First off this hotel has bed bugs! I woke up itching and found one crawling in the sheets after a quick search. The hotel staff did absolutely nothing about this even after talking with two different people. Our room was also very stuffy and hot and the toilet only flushed about half the time. The breakfast was also very disappointing and we ended up skipping it our second day. It isn't in a terrible location, but expect about 20 minutes on the subway before reaching the center of London. Overall a very bad stay!
