At l'Hotel de la Europe
The room we stayed in was very small and cramped. One of the windows could not be darkened at night, and there were loud neighbors partying until late at night. We didn't get much sleep. Towels were inadequate - one bath towel and one smaller towel for 2 people.

Great for the money
Nothing special but everything we needed. The room was small for what Americans are accustomed to, but this is Europe, and I wasn't expecting anything else. The front desk and cleaning staff were very friendly and helpful. Internet was slow and I lost my signal a lot, but it's "free". Tons of restaurants, shops, grocery stores, ATMs, in the immediate area, and the nearest metro stop (Brochant) is very close...Kurt over a minute on foot. It seems that there were an abnormally high number of foreigners in the area, but I didn't find it to be dodgy.

Sketchy Hotel.
The area actually wasn't that bad. The metro station is super close as well as a grocery store, ATM, laundry mat, and all kinds of restaurants. The hotel though is not great at all. The worst part is that the walls are really thin and you can hear the people next door having a normal inside voice conversation. Which isn't an issue until you are trying to sleep or late at night hearing a drunk couple talking and then being woken up to them making love at 2am. There really is no privacy and it's pretty sketchy.. The people that work there are super nice though.

Good!!
As others mentioned about the location, I never felt like it was in a seedy or undesirable part of town. I always felt very safe. The rooms are small, but we didn't need much more than a bed and a clean place to stay--and this had both. The beds were actually quite comfortable and the hotel staff was very helpful (the guy that works the night desk was very helpful and personable). This was a great stay for the price and is worth it! It is literally a street over from the Brochant metro station so is very convenient. There is no elevator so you will need to climb a spiral staircase (didn't bother us at all) but just letting you know in case you have a lot of suitcases.

Not what I expected
The good: after the first night they changed our room upon our request without any problems. The young guy is friendly and his English is good. Good price for being right by a Metro station. Mattresses were comfortable and shower OK The bad: The first room they gave us was super tiny, could hardly move around and there was no room to put luggage, etc. Heating is centralized and during the night it got too warm to be under the covers and not warm enough to be on top of them so that made it uncomfortable. Place is so small that you can hear what people are saying in the room next to you when they talk with a regular tone of voice. The ugly: rooms smell like sewer pretty bad, it seems to come from the shower. It smelled so bad that we had to open the windows during the night (in December)
