Two star experience disguised as four
As I type this, the intercom in my room is shouting "AHH BEE" at full blast over and over and has been doing so for 30 minutes. I called the font desk. First she said "I don't know what you are talking about." I hold the phone to the speaker. "I don't know what that is." Then I ask to speak to a manager. Suddenly she finally admitted, "oh yes. It's a test we do." I'm here on business. Supposed to be working, and on a conference call. My boss asks, "what is that noise?" This is really embarrassing. It won't stop. I can't get work done. Yesterday when I came in, my room's wifi didn't work. I asked for any help but their answer was, "sorry it's a sunday, we don't have a tech today." The wifi does connect, but the speed is sub-1kbps so obviously I can't skype or upload files. Again, I'm here on business. Gotta have this stuff. Finally, after asking to speak to a manager (why does this always seem to work? Makes me feel like a jerk) they put me in a different room. Wifi still doesn't work. New room has a way smaller desk than the last one, too, and some kind of giant metal locking mechanism on the closet so I can't get in. I ask again for help with the internet and the lady says, "I asked around and people say it's fine." How the is that supposed to help me? I now have to use my roaming data plan which is costing me a fortune. The cleaning staff woke me up multiple times at 8am. They messed up my breakfast and tried to charge me for their mistake. This has really been lousy.

Front desk disappointment
Room was clean but small for two people - nowhere to put suitcases for two people - we were tripping over each other. Getting to the bathroom in the middle of the night was a dangerous trip with the narrowing of the passage way due to the cupboard and fridge. On the last day of our stay I asked about the best way to get to the airport in the middle of the night - a very friendly staff person told us that it would be easy to get to the airport by cab and it should cost no more than 30 euros and take no more than 25 minutes. When I went back to arrange for a cab and a wake up call another staff on shift said that it would take an hour by cab and at least 50 euros to get to the airport. We showed this staff person the suggested travel time on google maps and was told that google maps was incorrect - it would take an hour. The reality is the cab took 25 minutes and the cost was 40 euros. It was annoying to get two different answers from two different people who both work the front desk. These are the people that guests count on to know the answer to basic questions. More annoying was the second person did not like us questioning his estimate of an hour travel time. These people are in the hospitality business - during the five nights that we stayed we did not require any services from the desk until the last night. We were disappointed with the one particular staff person.

Room was very large, bed comfy, slept very well, although do not sleep with windows open if room at the back. Building work going on in another building towards end of street and the noise will wake you. Okay if you keep window shut. You don’t really need to open windows as Air conditioning is great and was much needed. I had feather bedding, staff very happy to change for hypoallergenic bedding. My son had the sofa bed and he also slept well. Room was spotlessly clean, shower great, nice and powerful. Staff very friendly, helpful and approachable. Only downside for me- I’m a tea drinker, the room offers teabags and a coffee machine, but no kettle. I did call down to reception to explain this and also that I don’t drink coffee or really know what to do with the machine to heat water for tea. Person I spoke to said they would send some instructions. I never received these. On checkout I mentioned this and was told you can request a kettle and staff member apologised. It’s a shame I was not told this before when I called. Also if teabags are being offered a kettle should already be in the room as it is in every other hotel I have stayed in. Regardless of this I would stay again, the hotel is ideally situated for all sight seeing, close to transport, eating and drinking establishments and apart from the lack of a kettle I couldn’t fault the place.

The Select is clean, fairly new with helpful staff and modern rooms with A/C, a feature that isn't that common in Berlin. I was there early September and that was a bonus after the sun beat down on the hotel all day. Hotel is just down the street from touristy Checkpoint Charlie, but no matter. The windows are hi tech and you can't hear a thing in the morning unless you open them. The location is excellent! Near sites in the east and museum Island There was some construction in front of hotel, but even with that noise, it wasn't too bead. I wasn't there to sleep all day anyway Breakfast was decent at 12.4 euro. Wouldn't do it every day, but with some fresh fruit for the road, it was worth it if you want to just have coffee, fuel up, and go. I rented a bike and used it for my entire stay. Berlin is flat so this three speed rental was just fine. Berlin is a total bike city! I came to visit my son and his bike had some issues, so after my pitch, the staff ventured to the super's cave and found me some tools so I could tune it up.. I would definitely stay there again on my next trip to Berlin, especially in summer!

Great location!
We booked the hotel because of the location. It’s small as expected. Reception staff was very friendly and polite. However, other staff we met at the hotel hallway during stay were very cold and appear unfriendly - not eye contact or say hello. We have a room right in front of the lift and when opened the balcony window, it was facing a big loud fan from opposite building. At first, we really worried about the noise but it was actually fine, as long as you don’t open the window at night then you won’t hear a thing. The room has a fan so we don’t have to open balcony window at night. Hotel also supplied tea and coffee, which was great (we didn’t have it at Berlin hotel). Hotel can improve a bit more in cleaning the wall. You can only get on the bed on one side (room is small) and the wall has a few marks on it. I can’t help to stare at at night when got into the bed. So I put the cushion against the wall while sleep. In all, it was good experience. Hotel also supplied towel and bottle water when we go for a run in the morning, very nice! We will recommend this hotel.
