The way to enjoy the XO Park West is to arrive blindfolded, or at the dead of night. It has to be the ugliest building in Amsterdam, and one of the most hideous in Europe. But once you're inside, through a convoluted circular entrance with automated swing doors, it doesn't matter. If - for some strange reason - you've come to Amsterdam to sit outside the hotel and stare at its form and structure, choose somewhere else. The benefits of being in this relative outpost in the north-west of the city is that it's quiet and peaceful; no outdoor sounds, no babble, no late-night rumpus, just quiet. It has a No19 tram route right outside, so you start to use that as a personal transport, gliding into Amsterdam's attractions. Locally there's a so-so Asian restaurant and an excellent pizzeria (we ate twice there, and loved it), so you're not completely isolated. There is also the Westerpark, along a tree-lined walk, just 15 minutes' stroll away. If you want to be in the hubbub, you'll have chosen a hotel in the heart of town. But this works well. The big buffet breakfast is worth having (it's 12.50euro if you order in advance, 15euro if you just buy day-to-day... but there is some flexibility at the front desk if you put on a sweet expression and tell the manager how young they look. The rooms are fine - the bathrooms very good indeed. There are no views from the windows, but the beds are extremely comfortable. Pillows? Not quite as comfortable. They are filled with foam offcuts.

Fair 4.0
A mixed bag for a hotel with no alcohol licence
I had to stay here recently on 2 occasions for work. The location suited me as it was within walking distance of where I needed to be. If I had to describe the hotel, I would say that some of it is 4 star, but other parts of it are 2 at best. On check in, the lobby and bar area seemed nice and the reception staff was quite pleasant. However, they pointed out at this stage that the hotel does not have an alcohol licence which was surprising. Given I spend my day working away from home the simple pleasure of a beer at dinner cannot be overstated and where the hotel is situated, there is no bar close by. When I went for food in the evening in the bar again this was disappointing. Selection was average and the meal on arrival was nothing to write home about. In fact, the food combined with the lack of beer meant I had a second, much more pleasant, dinner in a pizza house locally. The wifi was quite appalling both times I stayed (2 weeks apart) to the extent I could not do any work. Also the minibars didn't work and when I asked to charge items to my room they would only allow this if there was a prepayment on the account (I might expect this in an Ibis but not in a hotel like this). On the positives, the breakfast was superb with a huge selection (though it was not cheap) and the beds were quite comfortable. However, for the money, I will not be staying here again while there are better options close by.

Good 6.0
Very disapointing
The staff were extremely helpful and attentive on checkin, less so when we asked to change room due to a funny odour. Wanted us to stay in the room for 1 night, then Check out outting our bags in bag room, then che k in to a different room at 3pm the next day!!!! Smell turned out to be wet carpet from a leak. The surrounding areas was very dirty, with rubbish blowing all around the entrance and approached. Fly tipping across the road from the entrance added to the feeling of this being a second rate hotel out in the suburbs. Trams were regular but the 20min ride with a change was often standing.

Very Good 8.0
The hotel is located conveniently just outside Amsterdam city center (Centrum). There is a tram stop right at the entrance of the hotel, where no. 19 can be taken to the Centrum (switching to 13 or 17). The location of the hotel is also convenient if you have a car and would like to do trips outside of Amsterdam. The condition of the hotel is very good, and there is a gated parking lot for 15 euros a night. When we first checked-in, we were assigned the "comfort" room, which was smaller than what we booked. We informed the front desk, and they had us moved to our "Standard" room, which was spacious and clean. Georgia at the front desk was not too friendly. Every time we ask her about something, she sort of gives the look, and reluctantly answers our inquiries. Other than that, everything else was fine.

Exceptional 10.0
A very nice hotel in Amsterdam
We stayes for 2 nights. The rooms are huge and the facilities are great. It is clean and in good condition. Breakfast is very good. The staff was amazing and very helpful and assisting. We enjotyed the stay. The only con is that it is not in the center, but there is a tram right outside the door. It takes ~ 15 min. inthe tram to get to the center. Overall, great value for money
