Beautiful, exclusive accommodation
The Hotel Protea Mbweni Ruins was a really beautiful accommodation. The room was really nice. My mother and I stayed at the hotel and the room we were in had separate sleeping quarters for me. The beds were comfortable, the sitting area was nice, and there were screens and mosquito nets everywhere. The bathroom was great; the water pressure, temperature, and toiletries provided were all excellent. One thing that really set the hotel apart was that it is only 15 rooms. This made for a very intimate feeling. When coupled with the low-key entrance next to the ruins and the dedicated beach front access, it felt really exclusive. Breakfast had a lot of choice and the staff were very attentive and helpful in the morning. I would absolutely stay here again.

It was great. Although when I arrived they said I only booked the hotel for 1 guest, so I had to pay an additional $50 per night for the second guest, if I had known this ahead of time I would have chosen a different hotel.

A super friendly boutique hotel
This is a super friendly boutique hotel. It is set in ruins of UMCA’s St Mary’s School for Girls and the grounds are steeped in history. The hotel is set in a tree covered site that slopes quite steeply down to the beach. It is a really beautiful location, but not necessarily good for people with mobility problems. The staff is great - very friendly and excellent service. The breakfast buffet has an amazing choice of dishes, together with pancakes and eggs freshly prepared to your specifications. The food provided by the restaurant during the rest of the day was excellent and very good value. The beach has a sandy sitting area but paddling in the sea tends to be a muddy because of the nearby mangroves. The pool is fairly small, but adequate for our children to enjoy a few hours a day. All in all, an excellent place to stay for our family.

An excellent stay
The hotel location and the facilities were excellent. We were welcomed by the manager and looked after very well for our stay. The small number of rooms allowed a more personal experience. The distance from Stone Town was perfect - not far but far away enough to allow relaxation.
