Nice location/Very Outdated Rooms
The staff was friendly, but the rooms were very outdated and I am not an overly picky person. Carpets inside the room and in the hallway looked like they were from early 1980's. AC was out, and the room in general was very worn and dingy. Good location if you want the convenience for being right outside the gate of Mount Rainier, but the hotel in general needs some updating. Based on the pictures of the hotel I also thought we were staying in a rustic cabin, instead we were put in the 2nd floor of the convenience store below.

Great Hotel Except for the Paper Thin Walls
Overall, this hotel was in a great location--literally right outside the Nisqually entrance to Mt. Rainier National Park. The staff was friendly and check-in was easy--the hours were a little inconvenient, but not a big issue. The room was nice and clean, we stayed in the inn (there are cabins you can rent as well) and the walls were PAPER THIN. We shared a wall with another room as well as the store and we literally heard every detail of everyone's conversation...so awkward. Everything was great except for that one fact, which was a huge disappointment. It was nice that we still had good WiFi and cell reception despite the spotty service elsewhere in the area.

Gateway to Horror
My wife and I toured the Olympic Peninsula and stayed one night at Gateway Inn. Other than the beautiful surroundings of Rainier National Park, this was the WORST lodging experience of my life!(and we've traveled extensively) The friendly, helpful staff was the only good thing I can think of. Terrible bed, pancake pillows, uneven floors, extremely poor lighting, cramped shower, thin wall between adjoining room. Had to put room coffee maker on floor, just to find an outlet for it to operate. I realize that these folks are pretty poor and need all the income they can get during the peak summer tourist season, but do NOT go there, unless you're totally desperate! I hate to sound so negative, but wished that some other traveler had been this honest and had saved us the expense/trauma of this experience!

CAUTION!!! Do not stay here!!
We booked 3 junior suites. When we arrived, they had 2 junior suite and one standard suite for us. Fine so far. When we went into the first junior suite, we noticed a horrible smell, so we tried to open the windows. We find all the window screens were broken so if we left the windows open, mosquitos would infest the room (and there are lots of mosquitos in this area). So we had to deal with the smell. In the second Junior suite, we found a non working AC. Since this is on the 2nd floor with no attic and no roof insulation, and has been baking in the 95 degree sun all day, the room was well over 100 degrees. We brought this to the owner's attention, and he just dismissed it saying he was comfortable in the room and that the AC can't be broken because it's relatively new. He didn't offer an apology, refund or anything. All the windows were on the same side of the room so there was no air cross flow so we had to stay in a hot and uncomfortable room all night. My 1 year old and 8 year old were fussy all night because it was too hot to sleep. Finally by 7am the next morning, the temps in the room have managed to go down to a more bearable 85 degrees. The only room that was acceptable was the standard suite. The attitude of the owner was very negative and rude, and didn't even attempt to fix the issues or give us different rooms. I would not recommend this Inn to anyone!
