Great location if you don't plan to be in the room
Excellent location, terrible hostal. Very hard to find because it's located on top of another hostal, on the 3rd floor of the building (in American, that means the 4th floor). When you walk in, you're bombarded with a smell of smoke. To get in, you have to ring the doorbell which rings loud for all to hear. The owner is very nice and sweet though, she speaks no English but is very easy to understand if you know a little Spanish. She will come let you in and check you in, then you probably won't see her again. The hostal must allow animals because I heard dogs barking in the hallway, which doesn't bother me but is worth mentioning. The rooms didn't seem to smell like smoke and were clean enough, but there was no tv and it was very bare and boring. Free wifi which sometimes works better than others. The room I rented had a private bathroom which was almost as big as the room itself and was nice with good shower pressure, but the room was right next to the shared bathroom so you could hear everyone going to the bathroom through the wall. There are better rooms farther from the shared bathroom though. I got there at 11pm and there were no problems checking in late or checking out early for an early flight. Great location right in the heart of Madrid and only steps to Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol with plenty of shopping, restaurants, and bars nearby. Because of the location, I'd recommend staying there if you don't plan to be in the room much.

A basic, clean, cheap and perfectly located option
I visited Madrid for a couple of days, solo, wondering most of my time outside in the city and coming back to hotel just for sleep. My room was single, very clean and the location was absolutely perfect! 2 minutes from metro and the main squares around Sol. The check in was very quickly and easy, although the receptionist didn't speak english. Very simple, very cheap, a basic solution.. I highly recommend it for the traveller who does not want luxerous and expensive hotels. I have just 2 remarks to make: 1. the soundproofing of the building was not very good-so bring with you ear plugs and 2. the heating was not working during the morning, only late evening...so waking up was a little bit a cold experience..( I stayed there 9-11 december).

Very basic room
Very basic hostal. No frills. Clean though. Sink in room. Sheets old. Fairly quiet given how loud neighbors tend to be. Not too friendly but I guess that's fine. Good location

GOOD. Super location, but no elevator
Location is brilliant. The Lady who owns and runs it was very efficient, quick and friendly, with just enough English to get by. The shared bathroom entirely depends on who has used it before you, but I had no complaints. Rooms were basic but felt clean, the only thing that didn't strike me as 100% clean was the blanket on top of the bed sheet. I made sure to push it down a little when I was in the bed to make sure I didn't touch it, but this meant that my top half was cold with just a sheet to cover my shoulders :( In general, for the price especially, well worth it and no complaints. However be aware that it's on the third floor and there's no elevator!! (The stairs are NOT steep though)
