Good for the money
We stayed here for a few nights to save money, and it was a great choice. Front desk staff was so helpful, lots of maps and advice on what to do and see and how to get there! Much more helpful than other places we've seen. You can also buy daily bus passes at the desk, which was great. We had a private room with 2 bunks which was cozy. We shared the top bunk and used the bottom for opening our bags, and had no issues sleeping two on one mattress. The location is great for pretty much everything!

unclean
Both room and passageway are unclean, especially passageway have unpleasant odor. Compared with other guesthouses, there are better options in Kyoto.

Superb value
Hostels aren't for everybody, so understand this before you commit to staying at one for several days. Khaosan guesthouse is, however, as good as a hostel as you can get, for these reasons: private shower closets, private toilet rooms, and free computer stations. I stayed in a private room with two beds so I cannot comment on the dormitory experience. The only negative aspects of this hostel are related to the other guests who are staying there. For instance, somebody stole my yogurt cup from the fridge. And there were a couple of international travelers next door who spoke really loudly (the walls are very, very thin). Also, having Toto toilets with bidets and butt cleaners are a terrible idea for hostels, because hostels attract international guests who will not know how to properly use them. I can't tell you how gross it is to walk into a toilet closet and find bidet water sprayed all over the toilet seat and toilet seat cover and the floor, because somebody didn't use it right and didn't clean up after themselves. Still, if not for the other guests, this hostel is really an outstanding value for the area, and for Kyoto in general. Easy access to public transportation.

budget hotel for backpackers
The facilities were clean. You have to remove your shoes upon entering each floor. My only issue is that the twin room #2A had a smell like sweat and it never went away the 2 days I was there with the window open. Secondly, the lower bunk bed had a rail guard which should be removed since there is no real sitting space in the room except for a small stool. The bathrooms and showers were cleaned frequently.I had to move to a 6-bed female room because i decided to stay another night. That room was spacious and did not smell and there were lockers with keys for each person.
