Excellent ryokan with fantastic service
I loved to two night stay at Sowaya which was my first time visiting Kyoto. The gentleman at the reception (might be the owner?) was lovely and did everything he could to make my stay comfortable. Spoke good English and helped answer many of my tourist questions, even helped me flag a taxi to the train station. The area and location is safe and the ryokan is very well kept, clean and decorated nicely. I got a private bathroom to avoid having to do the public bath which I was happy about but others may like the public bath experience.

Incredible hotel in Kyoto!
What an incredible little ryokan in Kyoto! I never stayed at a ryokan before, and thought to give it a try in Kyoto. Wow, it's better than any of the western hotel I have stayed at all. The staff including the owner and the night front desk staff both spoke good English. They are polite, eager to know the customers, and very helpful showing how to get around Kyoto. The room is much bigger and more comfortable than the western hotels I stayed around Japan. I love the fact that there is a separate shower, sink, and toilet area. The hotel room is immaculate, and well stocked with amenities such as toiletries, socks, bathrobe, and slippers. The staff refill the hot water for coffee and tea daily, and refill/rotate out the different tea cookies. There is a good size and again immaculate onsen on the first floor. This ryokan is incredible for it's value, one would pay much more for the same service, personal attention, and hospitality for a western hotel. The hotel is also centrally located on the east side of the city, and very convenient to visit many sites. It was the perfect stay!

Nice location, friendly staff and quiet room.
It was our first and second night in Japan so we were more than a little tired. The inn was very quiet and comfortable. We did not purchase the meals so can't comment. The Japanese bath was lovely!
