With great partiers comes great earplugbility
The hotel is on the main entertainment area of downtown in Cardiff. Because of that, it's inherently going to be a little loud. Reception is upstairs and requires a different elevator than the rest of the rooms, which I assume is because the building is older. The checkin was easy and the staff is pleasant. Rooms are normal European size, and have good bathrooms. Again, like most euro hotels, they don't have full walls or curtains in the shower. So weird. They do have towel warmers though, because the UK is awesome. Breakfast is good, though perhaps a bit expensive. The hotel is near several buses and walkable from the rest of downtown, the University and the castle, which is great. The only problem I had was the walls being very thin. A bunch of drunks came in at 3 in the morning, screaming at the top of their lungs and woke me up. When I complained the next day though, the manager was kind enough to give me a room higher up, which was also lovely. All in all, this is a good hotel, but recognize that if you're not there to go out and have fun or whatever, it's not an amazing location for business travelers, etc. The street is loud, and the chance of having partygoers staying there is not low.

Best value for money for the cost conscious travel
Of the two hotels I stayed in, in this immediate area, the Royal gave the best value for money. And it is right across the street from a Witherspoon restaurant for a value breakfast

A Gem in the City.
The Royal Hotel, built 1866 is full of history and situated in the heart of Cardiff on St.Mary's St. Easy walking distance to the train station and buses run every 12 minutes. The hotel is privately owned and while it no longer has its grand entrance, it has been nicely refurbished. The reception area and bar are in the starting blocks of an update from what I endearingly refer to as 'brothel chic purple'. There are Bee Hives on the roof of the hotel, with trained staff caring for them, a testament to the integrity of the hotel owner. The hotel is convenient to the castle, great shopping, Cardiff Bay and the airport is accessible by bus or taxi. You'll not find more interesting pubs anywhere on the planet. The staff at the Royal are fabulous with a special shout out to Marcus, Gareth and Raf who were informative, professional and welcoming. We look forward to staying there on our next trip.
