Quiet stay with great food
Great food -- both dinner and breakfast. Nice quiet area. Would stay again.

Our room was given away to larger tour group
We had a reservation for 2 nights. A large number of people came on a tour bus, so they decided it was a better business decision to give our room away to get the tour bus business. We were not notified until we arrived to register. We were very disappointed. They sent us to a hotel a modest distance down the road that was "fancier" with a pool, but neglected. The new hotel was not a hotel we would have chosen to stay in. He said if we did not like the new hotel we could come back for the second night. Great offer, except changing hotels every night is not so great. Was it ethical of the Hotel Hlid? I do not think so. It could happen to you.

Not the best experience
Difficult to rate a hotel when we were involuntarily moved (to Hotel Ork), to accommodate an overbooking for a tour group. The room at Hotel Ork we considered inferior, as it was small, hot, and semi functioning. The next day we spoke personally with the manager of Hotel Hild to relate our experience and requested a 20-Euro credit due to the differential in room pricing and accommodations. Hotel Ork, has a big facility, and a nice swimming pool area which we didn't use. The desk manager Jose was very pleasant. Their restaurant was good, and we had a nice dinner. Too bad the room was so average.

Budget Motel w/ Strong Cleaning Solution Scent
Hotel Hlid is an extremely budget stop to stay if you need to crash outside of the city. While the reviews led us to believe that this was a hidden gem in a secluded area I'd argue that it's an extremely budget motel. When we first entered we were hit with a strong smell of cleaning solution; one that was strong in every inch of the hotel, including our room. It made me nauseous and I had to eventually put out some scented face wipes around my pillow to be able to sleep. The breakfast, which reviewers had raved about, was adequate but by far the worst of the three spots we stayed in Southwest Iceland. The room was clean and reminded me of a college dorm room: standard furniture, two twin beds and no character or decor. The staff were incredibly friendly and kind and definitely run a solid lodging option. I wish we'd better understood the level of hotel we were staying at before booking; I would not return or recommend to a friend.

Eccentric generosity
Hotel Hlid was easily our favorite place we stayed while in Iceland. We entered the hotel and encountered a friendly man painting a mural on the wall. We were checked in by the hotel chef (also a renowned filmmaker) and his wife (former news editor of the main newspaper in Iceland) who engaged us in stimulating and amusing conversation during our stay. This place is very eccentric in a friendly and welcoming way, so if you appreciate that sort of thing, you should go out of your way to stay. The dinner was one of the best we had in Iceland and the breakfast buffet spread was generous and delicious. Mostly, we just enjoyed talking with the really cool staff and learning more about Iceland. We would go back in a heartbeat. It's also in the middle of the country and would be a great place to see the northern lights on a clear night. And the whole Hveragerdi area is really great with its hot springs and horseback riding opportunities.
