Excellent Service.
During my recent trip to London on the Spring Bank Holiday weekend, I decided to book a stay at this hotel. The pictures on display were definitely the selling point as was the positive reviews I had read. And I was not to be disappointed. I frequently visit London and have stayed in many hotels but the Montcalm is definitely the best one thus far. The service was above excellent and as hard as I try I am unable to find any faults. All staff members who I came in to contact with were always smiling, friendly and helpful. At the initial check in - I had left my luggage having arrived at the hotel 4 hours before check in. I was told at reception that I could return before 2 for the check in and that my luggage would be delivered to the room. On my return I was asked by the concierge if I had stayed at the hotel before - to which I replied the negative. Instead of merely giving me directions to my room, he personally walked me right to the door step. On entering the room, my bag was already placed neatly on the luggage racks, with our coats hung up in the wardrobe. The room was very clean and in good condition. Air conditioning was in perfect working condition as well. The bathroom was slightly small - but had excellent facilities including a rainfall shower. The bed and pillows were extremely comfortable. Definitely made for a good nights sleep. The highlight however was definitely the excellent service from all the staff at the hotel.

No access to the Club Lounge with a Club room
The hotel is fine and ideally placed for trips to the Barbican Centre. The staff were efficient and generally friendly. There were a couple of issues with the room that I didn't become aware of until the morning of departure; neither of the phones in the room were working and you couldn't access most of the TV channels. The robe was the softest I've ever come across, but had no belt with it. I brought these up with reception at checkout and was happy enough with their response, but it's still not what you'd expect of a five star hotel. There were also a couple of pairs of step ladders and some packing boxes left in the vestibule to the block that I was staying in. They were there at 15.00 when I checked in and still there at 09.00 the next morning when I checked out. My main complaint, however, is that, although I'd paid for a Club Room, I didn't have access to the Club Lounge even though I'd mentioned to the receptionist that I wouldn't book breakfast in the morning as I'd just have the continental breakfast in the Club Lounge. When I tried to enter the lounge using my key card, access was denied. Checking this with reception, I was informed that Lounge access was only given if booked directly with the hotel and not if booking via an agency, such as Hotels.com. If you book a Club room and pay the additional cost, then you'd automatically expect access to the Lounge or what are you paying an excess for? Very unhappy about my stay AND at this website for not clarifying!

Exceptional 10.0
Well-located hotel with excellent service
The staff here are wonderful; observant, attentive and thoughtful. We were kindly upgraded to a suite with a view of the Barbican, after being overheard at reception that we love the architecture. Our duplex suite was clean and roomy, with great lighting, toiletries and a very comfortable bed. Having a desk upstairs and downstairs meant one of us could work while the other slept. My only caveat is that the sofabed downstairs was a bit uncomfortable to sit on, but there were other chairs and we could watch TV upstairs too. Service was superb; we had complementary drinks sent to the room on arrival, the club lounge had excellent canapes, sandwiches and snacks in the evening alongside a good choice of drinks, and the complementary continental breakfast was pretty substantial with good coffee. Check-in and checkout was pleasant and probably the most personalised I've experienced in a very long time. Although this is a very busy (and interesting) area we heard nothing in our room, but you can step out into a buzzing city street with the Barbican arts centre next door, Whitecross St food market and restaurants across the street, and the City within walking distance. Public transport is excellent, and the attached pub and restaurants are popular.

Great staff, confusing hotel
The hotel is converted from an old brewery, so the layout is restricted by its original construction. It is a maze, a rabbit warren, and although there are lots of internal direction signs, it is still easy to get lost. There are stairs or short flights of steps all over the place, and it is difficult to know which lift serves which part of which floor. The only lift that served our part of the 4th floor was out of use throughout our stay, so reaching our rooms necessitated climbing three flights of stairs as well as doubling back along the length of two corridors. My bathroom was cramped, with little space for brush and comb, deodorant, my spectacles whilst showering, etc. But the shower was spacious, with clear instructions. The room was very warm, but the window catch was broken so it was almost impossible to close the window firmly after opening it to cool the room. The bed was very comfortable, and I slept well. The hotel doesn't have its own restaurant. Breakfast is in the neighbouring pub or at additional charge by room service. All the staff were friendly and very helpful, I have absolutely no complaints! The hotel is in the City of London, just round the corner from the Barbican Centre and within walking distance of two Underground stations, both in Zone 1. An Underground train ride is necessary to reach the West End. I liked the welcoming attitude of the staff, but the inconveniences of the hotel make it unlikely that I shall stay there again.

Underwhelming for the price
I booked a night at the Montcalm as a treat for my partners birthday. A nights stay in a 5* Hotel was bound to go down a treat. However, it didn’t feel 5* - yes it was nice having someone open the door for you, concierge take you to your room and 3 balloons left on the bed because you mentioned it was your girlfriends birthday... but that was it. Once you were in your room, it just felt like any hotel. It was a very averaged sized ‘club room’ we were upgraded to, but for 5*, you expect perfection. You don’t expect the concierge’s response to a flickering, broken lightbulb is to just switch the whole set off and leave without even offering to call maintenance to have the issue resolved, which left a rather dark room even darker - to the point we had to use our phones torches to see in the dark cupboard where all the tea and coffee were hidden! One bonus of the room was the extra large comfy bed. However, this was quickly ruined first thing in the morning when all you could hear directly outside our room was people talking, running up and down the creaky, loud steps and slamming what appeared to be the cleaning storeroom door opposite. Not to mention the constant squealing sound of running water coming from the bathroom which must of been people around us having their early morning showers! Therefore, we will not be stay again at the Montcalm as overall it was disappointing for what we paid, and we will not be recommending to friends and family.
