A more traditional experience
It was fun to get some of the Ryokan experience during our trip. The kids enjoyed getting into the traditional yukata robes. The spa/Onsen was also very nice. The room has a traditional set up where you sleep on futons on the tatami mats. Service and staff were great. Close to the train station.

A wonderful ryokan in Takayama
The Oyado Koto No Yume exceeded our expectations! First of all, the location is perfect, a two minute walk from the station which is very convenient. Takayama is very walkable, and we enjoyed seeing it on foot. From the moment we walked into the lobby, we were Impressed. The wood beams and angled ceilings are grand and the space is still cozy. The seating was comfortable. There’s a colorful gift shop integrated into the space. Check in was easy and I was assured that they could accommodate my dietary restrictions, which they did perfectly. We were very lucky to get the spacious room 306 which is composed of three rooms including a separate bedroom with a thick king size mattress on the floor. I highly recommended requesting it. Most of the staff speaks very good English. They made dinner reservations for us which were necessary during high season. Breakfast was excellent and different each day. The chairs in the dining room were comfortable. There are breakfast options to accommodate anyone’s desires. Both mornings there was something to cook at the table. One morning my husband wasn’t feeling well and they brought him a fruit plate, yogurt and cereal. When we checked out, we were given two gifts: a choice of lovely postcard packs and some edible goodies that we had enjoyed the day before. They made note of that. They couldn’t have been nicer. We stayed two nights and were sad to leave. We weren’t too sure we’d like a ryokan, but we really liked this one!

Some of the best service I have ever had. I knew that Japan is a hospitable country, but Oyado Koto No Yume takes it to the next level. This may be typical of a Ryokan, but they were insanely attentive. Each staff member knew who we were and were ready to help with anything. The check-in process included a wind-down with hot towel, tea, and snack along with explanation of the amenities at the hotel. The room itself was also roomy and comfy, with traditional Japanese sliding paper doors sectioning off different sections, keeping the room warm and private. One recommendation: opt for the set breakfast here. The food was great, with a large variety of dishes as well as many options of coffee, teas, and dessert (yes, breakfast dessert). You'll option to choose Japanese or Western breakfast option, we only did Japanese but I can't recommend it enough. Lastly, for any onsen fans, the shared bath is as nice as any public baths I've been to in Japan. Anyone who doesn't want to use a public bath can of course shower/bath in their own rooms or pay extra (~1100 yen) for a private bath house with up to 4 people (co-ed okay) located on the 5th floor.
