Loved our stay here
Great big clean room with a view! We were happy with our stay on Sugar Loaf Key at the Sugar Loaf Lodge. It’s about 17 miles to Key West in a more comfortable and less crowded part of the Keys. We loved our view and the friendliness of everyone at the lodge. Only complaint is that electric outlets are few and far between. Despite that, we will definitely be back

Unimpressed. I really wanted to like it.
Mid-century vibe since that's when the place was built. It's a shame that it is run-down, but let's assume that part of the look / lack of landscape is from the recent hurricane and displaced people (funded by FEMA) living there for long periods. Room smelled like smoke, AC unit made a loud grinding sound, but worked, rooms are "clean enough" but need work. Walls are thin; we could hear the TV in both adjacent rooms. Sliding doors that lead to the patio off our room were unlocked when we checked in - good thing we checked... Lock pegs are rusty and difficult to lock the sliders. Bathroom is very basic. Toilet was loose. It's simply a roadside motel that happens to have a history and amazing views. Place could be awesome with substantial renovation. Original art in each room, very cool. Staff was friendly but seemed to be frazzled with all of the FEMA residents

The lodge has been around for years and there is some visible wear, the rooms are clean and the tiki bar has cheap drinks and great local people watching. If you are looking for a newer hotel with brand new amenities, this place isn't for you. If you want a clean room with prices that won't kill the piggy bank it's worth the stop!
