Very Nice Option in Highlands
We were pleasantly surprised at the Skyline Lodge on a last-minute trip to Highlands during peak season. Know what it is: Skyline is an older property (1960s vintage) in a pretty spectacular setting. Our room was spacious and clean, but the bathroom was very small and mundane for modern standards. Essentially, it's what it is: A 1960s style motel room that is well maintained and gently updated. The bed was fine. The chairs outside the room were a nice touch. The property has pretty nice amenities. Altitudes Restaurant was great. We had two excellent dinners there and two very good breakfasts. The bar is small but nice and the wood-burning fire was great on a fall evening. The staff was uniformly friendly.

Should be condemned!
We did not end up staying at this hotel. Upon check-in we were told that we were upgraded not once but twice. When we opened the door to the suites we were hit by a wall of cigarette smoke and mildew. Being pregnant, I was horrified but went searching for the room anyway. Room 501 was the only numbered room on that floor and I can only imagine what the other rooms were used for because when we walked past they were filthy with clothes, food and beer cans strewn about. We walked into our room and the maid was spraying the comforter. She told us it would take 15 more minutes to clean the room. At this point, we went out onto the deck where the hot tub had gone to die ten years prior to make other arrangements. Luckily, we found a room at another hotel and it was clean and close to town. If this room was an upgrade then I can only presume the other rooms resembled prison cells with metal beds and communal toilets because NOTHING could've been worse. They reimbursed us (and again, I presume this happens a lot) and we went on to have a great weekend but it would have been a disaster if we had stayed at this run-down, smoke-filled, plywood box on stilts. Do yourself a favor and keep looking!

Unacceptable Place
First and last time here! Very old room! Smells old and musty! Bed is horriable and mold in shower. Ceiling looked like a mobile home ceiling. No elevator for handicap! View is of trees across the street! Bottom line don't waste your time or money!! We tried to cancel and was informed we would be charged anyway. Hurricane Matthew caused family to come to our house but we had to leave and stay at this unacceptable place. They did call me the morning of the reservation and ask if I was coming or not, they wanted to rent the room out AGAIN!! Seems wrong to charge a guest full price and then charge a new guest full price AGAIN!! Almost forgot the bugs in the room. Stay anywhere but here!!

Carpet was dirty. No plastic bag provided for dirty clothes; No microwave; wi-fi password not provided at check-in; restaurant was closed on Monday, it was 3-4 miles to closes restaurant; we bought food for breakfast to take back to room because we were not informed that when the restaurant on premises was closed a basket with a few items for breakfast would be brought to our door in the morning.
