Hakone Hotel, Hakone
Overpriced, outdated and the amazing view was not worth the unaccommodating service. The Hakone Hotel was probably incredible in 1986, but looks like it hasn't been updated or refurbished since then. The view from the room was awesome, BUT the service at check-in was disgraceful!!! There was an error on the booking and the hotel added on three additional fees for my 8 year old son. This added almost $100 extra dollars to the bill which was over $325 for the night already! I was furious at the additional cost and they did nothing to try and lessen the blow of the added fees. They were cold, rude and unforgiving about all of it. Even with the great view, I would not return.

Secluded hotel to enjoy Onsen and nearly park
Hotel is in a beautiful location on Lake Ashi near a great hike/ park along the lake. Room was great with a lovely view of the lake. The outside of the hotel looks worn but the inside is very nice. The Onsens are wonderful. It is hard to get food in the are surrounding the hotel after 5 pm or before 9am but we enjoyed eating at the bar at Il Lago for dinner the 2 nights there. The chicken don and fish both were excellent!

No privte Onsen - No Tattoos allowed
We were misled by many of the reviews of this hotel. There is no private onsen and if you have any tattoos you are forbidden from using the hotel's public onsen. We were handed a piece of paper that explicitly said so once we checked in and the hotel staff saw the tattoo on my arm. There is honestly very little to do in the area short of a nice walk in a fairly rural part of Japan. The view of Mt. Fuji also leaves a lot to be desired. The bottom of the mountain is fully blocked, and you can only see the snow cap top if the weather is great and there are no clouds blocking it. Everything else we found in the hotel was overpriced (including the only breakfast option in town). We do not recommend this hotel.
