I had read all the reviews of most other hotels but thought the responders were just really picky. Well yes this hotel also has stairs too small even for my female size shoe 7. And yes my room was 15" wider than the bed & we could use wc, sink and shower without moving. I just did not expect this from a 3 star Good news was location and breakfast

Great location
I loved the location, close to restaurants, right on a canal. Very pretty location. We easily walked to the Anne Frank house, Dam square, flower market, and the train station. The breakfast was better then I was expecting with breads and jams/jellies and a toaster as well as lunch meats and cheese to make sandwiches, hard boiled eggs, cereal, milk, water, orange juice, coffee, tea and packets to make hot chocolate, which was the best I have had from a packet. I only saw our room but it was very small, basically just fit the bed with a tiny desk and 2 chairs jammed it and a small night stand on one side of the bed. It did have a closet too. We had our own bathroom with a shower which was nice and not always the case from my research. We really only slept there, so it was not a problem. The stairs are very small and the hallway narrow it is hard to carry suitcases up and down, just be aware. I mainly picked it because of location, free breakfast, free wifi, and price. For all of these reasons I am pleased with our choice.

Small
The bed had 18" of access on one side none on the other three sides. The mattress cover only covered 80% of the bed. The bathroom was so small you could not close the door while sitting on the toilet. The breakfast was good and the staff was great.

Possibly the worst hotel I have ever stayed at
I am in my 60's and have traveled widely Staying at the Hotel Hoksbergen was one of the most disagreeable travel experiences of my life. The Hoksbergen is an old, run-down hotel that has been recently purchased by new owners in the past month. Now, central Amsterdam hotels are extremely expensive, but when I found the Hoksbergen on hotels.com I was seduced by the price of 120 euros/night for a single room. The Hoksbergen is rated a 2 star hotel but this is the worst 2 star hotel I have ever had the displeasure to book. My room, number 12, was on the 4th floor, up a series of 59 EXTREMELY steep steps. The carpeting on the stairs is old, torn and ugly. There is no elevator. Inside the claustrophobic room of 110 sq. ft. (ten sq. meters) there was very little space for ANYTHING. Tiny closet for clothing, no chest of drawers, ugly brown walls, no view other than some windows of a much better hotel across the way. The bed and bedding were decent, as were the shower and bathroom-all fixtures were in good condition-but in order to sit on the toilet one has to extend one's feet outside the toilet door. Any sort of movement once I got out of bed meant that I bumped into either my belongings or a room fixture. Staying in the room (with its tiny 13 inch TV mounted high above the bed) for more than an hour-other than sleeping-was intolerable.

Small room but great price, breakfast and wi-fi
The hotel is located in an old canal house which meant steep steps and a small room. However, our room (#5)had a very nice bathroom even though it only had a double bed and view of the building next door. It was a great price for the location which was within walking distance of many areas (10 minutes from Anne Frank house, easy tram ride to other locations in town). The price included a very nice breakfast and fast Wi-Fi. The hotel has just been taken over by new owners so there might be other changes.
