Hotel Blue - a trip back in time.
This is the second time I have stayed with Hotel Blue. It is difficult to rate an older style 1920's hotel with around 22 guest rooms when it appears to be managed by a single family. When these style of hotels are run by large companies or hotel chains ( the Hydromajestic at Medlowbath for instance ) there usually is a fair deal of financial clout to keep them in perfect condition and restore them. Consequently, I expected this to be a more 1920's experience rather than an up-market hotel. Indeed, you wont be disappointed if you approach it with that understanding. I enjoyed my stay, albeit too brief, even for the 12 nights I actually stayed there in Room 7. The rooms don't really cater for the home away from home but are more traditional hotel rooms. The floorboards will even creak when stepped upon, on the upper floors, ask yourself when you stayed anywhere where that has happened? That all adds to a genuine 1920's country feel .... The room could have been vacuumed a little more often as the carpet did get filthy from the dirt carried in on shoes (depending which of many Blue Mountains walks you may decide to go on and how heavy the rainfall might be). The hotel does supply a good breakfast but don't expect a banquet or a great variety in the menu. The hotel is conveniently located for walks to the Prince Henry Cliff Walk Track, Echo Point and in particular; Federal Pass, the Leura Cascades, and Leura Falls.

Exceptional Staff, Beautiful Common Areas ...
The staff were terrific -- super friendly and helpful. The common areas beautifully retained the 1920's feel. They even played "period" music in the breakfast room. The breakfasts were good and plentiful. The only negative: the room itself was small and undecorated. It didn't bother us, but a couple of pictures would make a world of difference. We joked that the place seemed haunted -- but in a good way! WiFi was spotty. We'd probably stay there again. LOVED the Blue Mountains and Jenolan Caves.

Poor substitute
We agreed with Hotels Com to take a room in this hotel after our first accommodation was found to be abandoned. Told that if we agreed to take this reservation then no refund or cancellation could be made. The Hotel Blue looked shabby on the outside and even worse inside, worn carpets, damaged paintwork and peeling wallpaper. It was very noisy during the night with road noise, alarms going off and glass recycling collected at 3.30 in the morning, it was not a restful night. Breakfast was luke warm and poor quality. The hotel's only saviour was its staff who were really helpful

Quirky and quaint but enjoyable and memorable
You will remember this place for a long time and while initial impressions are not the best there are some very good memories particularly the live music---even at breakfast and the quirky and quaint nature of the place. Obviously the current owners are not in a position to totally update a premises that needs it and is in a prime position but there is something about the place that makes it memorable.

Shabby and unclean hotel
We stayed two nights. carpet in room felt like it had not been cleaned well for a long time. Coffee cups in room were dirty. We took them to reception and they were replaced. carpet throughout hotel had not been vacuumed for some time. In room, bathroom was unrenovated and shabby. No-one was at reception when we checked out early in the morning, and I later found that my credit card had been charged about $9 more than price as stated on hotels.com booking. Presumably this w as a credit card surcharge. That amounted to 4.5 percent. I was not told of this at check-in. If the hotel had been clean I would not have resented it so much. I visit the Blue Mountains a couple of times a year, and there are better places to stay in this price range. I will not stay there again.
