Castello D'Urso Somma B&B, Catania
A beautiful place that is remarkably Strange.
This is a beautiful property built as a Florentine castle that looks like a movie set. Unfortunately, it is in the middle of an extensive and ugly heavy commercial area with no restaurants or stores. It is convenient to the airport, which is why we chose it. They have no regular food service, but they did make food available that was not very good, but it was there (at an expensive price). The property seems to be mainly a place for events such as weddings and corporate parties and the other guests (I saw two) seem to be corporate long term stay guests who come and go according to their work needs. Giuseppi is a nice man who tries to be hospitable, but I do not think this place is really a hotel in the classic sense. I would return only to take pictures of the property.

Great villa in a beautiful garden
The hotel is a unique medieval villa with a nice garden and a pool. The staff is welcoming and accommodating. The neighborhood is not as nice, car or taxi is a must.

Little oasis close to Catania airport
Good hotels in Catania are hard to find, and even more so closer to the airport; we have stayed at several in the past that were horrible, so Castello D'Urso Somma was a little oasis in otherwise industrial only area just a couple of miles from the airport. It is a large, beautiful property (large well kept garden and grounds, stunning Olympic size pool) behind the gates - you feel totally secluded from the neighborhood. Rooms are in annex buildings, each has several rooms and a shared eating area where you can help yourself any time to breakfast items (yorgurt, milk, fruit, cereals, toasts, bread, spreads, cake - basic, but sufficient; there is espresso and tea as well). Rooms were not huge, but clean and bathroom with shower was actually very good size, especially for Europe. For the price paid, it exceeded our expectations and it was only a ten minute drive (without traffic) into the center of Catania and merely a couple of miles from the airport. The only item to note is that rooms are not soundproof, you can hear neighbors coming and people in the breakfast area, but it was only occasional. I would not hesitate to recommend the hotel and use it again.

Very mixed feelings.
To start with, this property is wrongly described on The distance to town is nearly twice the 3.9 miles claimed and although the lead pictures give the impression of sleeping in a castle, this is not so as the owner told me once I had made a non-refundable booking. On the plus side, Santuzza, the owner's daughter, has given me a most friendly welcome and been very helpful in arranging my programme. The castle and gardens are pretty and my room in a modern annex building was very comfortable. Especially the shower was superb. The distance from Catania proved a big nuisance. The hotel is located in a large former agricultural and industrial area just south of the airport, which has been allowed to completely fall into disrepair. There are decaying properties all around and rubbish in big piles, no discernible effort made to beautify the surroundings. The airport noise is clearly audible and woke me each day around 6 a.m.. Thank God, Catania is not a busy airport. Although I do not travel to watch TV, it would have been nice if an English news channel had been available. Sadly, only tons of Italian channels. The internet was very intermittent, very slow and breaking down some time, quite good at others. In these days, there is no excuse for this. The most disappointing aspect was the breakfast. In a country famed for its crusty breads and croissants, I got plastic wrapped / sealed and stale tasteless bread and cakes, HT milk etc..
