This is an old inn with restaurant and rooms, and has both a charm factor and a slightly seedy quality in terms of decor and maze of hallways and fire doors. The room was generally fine and the bathroom clean and modern. There's no one at the front desk overnight till --- well, I don't know, because we left at 7 to catch a plane and the place was deserted, so we just put the key on the front desk with other keys left there. Housekeeping guy told us, when we entered the room, not to open the only window in the room because we'll get "flies and wasps." He said to ask the front desk for a fan if it's too hot. It was pretty hot, so we asked for a fan. Man at the desk was very helpful and brought us a fan but also advised we could just open the window, and we did without any problem. Breakfast is included but they don't start till 8. Can't judge the restaurant, but the menu (with colored photos) look like pretty standard British fare. We ate at an excellent Thai place just down the street called Thai Boutique, and had breakfast at Costa's a few doors away which opens at 6. Convenient location in the town, if you want to shop a bit, though the town closes up around 5. Free parking in back of the hotel (you go around the block to enter it). About two miles from the Austen House, if that's your plan. We drove but it's walkable (and well worth it).

Good place to stay if visiting the Jane Austen

It is a fun little place to stay. The food at the attached restaurant was good. Just a quick bus ride to the Jane Austen Museum and Chawton House.

    An absolutely amazing hotel!

I would recommend this to anyone looking to stay in a hotel with a bit of character. The fact this was an old coaching inn was so exciting! The staff was brilliant and so kind. We had breakfast on the two mornings we stayed and it was very delicious. The rooms were large and spacious with a bathroom that was a mixture of modern and vintage. The location was perfect as it is on a street full of shops and bus stops to take you where you wanted to go.
