The Lake of Menteith Hotel, Stirling
Peaceful getaway, fantastic food
Recently redecorated room in tasteful classic style with modern amenities. Staff were friendly and helpful, though not terribly knowledgable about the menu, but all of the dishes were quite good (especially the trout main and smoked salmon + crab salad starter). View of the lake from room 2 is perfect. We took a pleasant boat ride to a small island late in the afternoon, but there isn't much else to do nearby. Very relaxing to be secluded for one night. Would certainly recommend for an easy getaway if you don't want to drive far from either Edinburgh or Glasgow, and don't want to fight the traffic along Loch Lomond.

This was a really lovely little hotel with all the extra touches......beautiful view of the lake from the lounge, where fresh delicious scones( with cream and strawberry jam) and tea were offered in the afternoon. It is much closer to Stirling than we realized. I wish we had spent an extra night here and used it as a base for our explorations of the area. Room was charming and well appointed, and it felt like we were staying in the home of friends. Our dinner was delicious and reasonable compared to other hotels we visited....the desserts were amazing! Only issue we had was that signs on the road called this “The Lake Hotel.” We were a bit confused but not a real problem. Other guests there seemed to be regulars, and we can certainly see why. We’ll be recommending this hotel to everyone we know.

Jekyll and Hyde
An otherwise enjoyable visit was spoiled by the poor quality of some of the dishes served in the restaurant and the bizarre scenario of trying to pass off a beef burger as a venison burger by smothering it in smoked ham and red onion marmalade. When this was queried no one from the kitchen or management showed up to address the issue, they sent a waitress to insist we were wrong but tell us they wouldn’t charge for the course. From five courses ordered, two were excellent, two were poor and one wasn’t what it was claimed to be. From a hotel that promotes itself on the quality of its restaurant it was a very poor show.
