Great Concept, Needs Tweaking.
The maitre d' was impatient and rude. When we asked for water and wine while we reviewed the menu, he refused, telling us we had to order our complete meal and drinks at the same time, and right away. He was so insistent that we all tried to accommodate his request, even though we had just gotten our menus. Then when one of our table made the mistake of trying to order dessert also, He cut her off and said "Not now! You order dessert after the meal!", and walked away. I should add that this was not a case of a language barrier, as we speak Spanish. This was just someone with an irritated, unfriendly behavior. I should add, however, that the other server ( a young woman with short, dark hair) was delightful and a very hard worker. She deserves a promotion! Also, the concierge desk staff were all very helpful and friendly.

Castle on the hill
We rented a car in Barcelona and drove the 1 1/2 hours to get there. Good drive. You need a car to get there. It was a history lesson an old castle on a hill. Great photo oops and a relaxing stay

A definite YES! With only minor quibbles
This is the second time my traveling companion has stayed here. Just like 15 years ago, the hotel is beautiful—a centuries-old castle perched high above a medieval village; but the front desk personnel is a bit laissez-faire. We considered the fact that this is a state-run hostelry (Paradores de Turismo are government locations), and that the employees are more like civil servants than what ne would expect at a fancy hotel. No one was outright rude to us, but we missed the warm and friendly welcome we'd received in other locations on our trip. That aside, our room (two twin beds) was large and lovely (beds fairly comfortable :). The view cannot be beat—Cardona is a magnificent location. We had breakfast one morning, and it was a plentiful and delicious buffet, though pricey. (We're vegan, so had limited choices; a problem with pay-one-price in general.) Definitely try the pear half in red syrup; it's very cinnamon-y.

Living like kings and queens
The view from the seventh floor was like looking out of the window of an airplane- totally amazing. It wouldn't matter how nice the room was - the view is everything. However, the room was very nice, bed comfortable and bathroom completely updated. The staff was first class, multilingual, and the restaurant fabulous. We also found that walking into town was quite easy and there were little restaurants there that were ok. It was amazing to walk back to the castle in the dark after dinner.
