Unfortunately we were stranded on the island with cyclone Debbie and had a lack of communication, given different stories on what to do during this time. People should have been evacuated on Saturday but were not. They brought more tourists onto the island before closing waterways and cancelling flights Saturday afternoon. If situation had been different it might have been a good holiday

Nice place for relaxing
Hamilton Island is an interesting place. It's a little like being on a cruise ship but on an island. You have a small choice of a few restaurants, a couple of bars (though this isn't a party place), and some nice views. It's a relaxing time for sure. Easy access to the reef and other islands through different tours. Also, it's free wifi on the island, accessible from most main parts of the island. There's also a very handy bus service (3 different routes) that takes you around the island for free. Tip - if you want to do a tour (and you will) then book it right away. If it storms hard then it might get cancelled, but get out to the reef and snorkel. Tip - if you want to book a golf cart (the only personal vehicle option) to drive around the island then book ahead. We tried on our last full day there and they were all booked up. You can still see things using the free buses so it's not a huge loss. Just kinda fun to drive a golf cart around. Tip - the Italian restaurant is pretty nice. The Mexican one is not very good if you are used to any decent form of Mexican food.

Great location, be prepared to spend lots of $$$
A little dated but overall good. Nice to have WIFI included. The pool is nice, but a couple of outdoor jaccuzzis would be a good addition to a hotel of this size and standard. Prices are on the high side but you are on an Island.

The Dahrma Initiative Ausie Style
My husband and I visited Hamilton Island during a recent trip to Australia. The best way we found to describe it is that the island (the entire island is owned by one man) is like the Dharma Initiative on the series Lost. Its very organized and convenient, but the lack of competition (since everything is owned by the same person) has obviously disincentivized competition that would lead to better quality food, lower prices and better upkeep in some areas such as pools and beach furniture. The location is very convenient for day trips to the GBR, Whitehaven Beach and other natural wonders (all through tour companies charging around $150-$300 pp/day). I would recommend it to a friend, but would set expectations by explaining the above. That said, we stayed in the simple, quaint and clean Bungalows, I'm sure that if you pay a premium to stay in the more luxurious accommodations, the experience would be somewhat different (though all restaurants would be the same). If you want to dive the GBR, or sit on Whitehaven beach and don't mind paying a premium for the convenient location while moderating expectations for food quality and certain luxuries, then this place is ideal.
