Riu Guanacaste - All Inclusive, El Ocotal
I don't even know where to start with this hotel. First off check in was great the guy who helped us was super nice. Then we head to the room, where it smelled, so muggy, we had to open the patio door in 90 degree weather just to somewhat get the smell out, also the air conditioner didn't work and it was always hot in there. We decide to head to the pool/pool bar, where the bartenders were completely rude, ignored us, didn't greet us until we ended up waving at them! That wasn't even the worse part, the bar was COVERED in bees, i'm not talking 10, 15 or 20, I'm talking 40-50 and they were all over the liquor bottles, and drinks. The staff wasn't even bothered by them, but I sure was because i am allergic to them, and I didn't even get to enjoy the pool the entire time i was there. The beach was dirty, and we couldn't even walk down it without beggers asking us to buy their stuff. ANNOYING! The food was mediocre at best, the drinks well low quality and so gross. Do yourself a favor and buy your liquor before you leave customs and the airport at the duty free place. I had seriously considered taking this trip as a loss and book a flight home after one day. The only thing that kept my sane was the excursions we took that kept me away from the hotel. Also keep a hold of your pool towels or they will charge you $20/towel if you don't return it. I will never stay at this hotel again I am sure there are better hotels, and Id rather spend that extra money!!!!! BEWARE!

After staying here a year ago and being very happy with it, I was not as happy this year. A new management company took over during the year and the food is not as good. I would rate the food a 5 / 10. The beds and pillows were also terrible. Another irritating thing was that the maids would wait until late PM to take care of our room (3 of 7 days) despite my having put the "service my room right away" thing on the door. The grounds are beautiful, always felt safe and secure, pool is nice, and the beach is below average. No english speaking TV stations except Fox news and CNN. The view from our second floor room was a roof top - not good. The nightly entertainment is also way below average.

Clean resort, safe area
We went to this resort for a friends wedding. It was a nice resort, not a five star but still clean with a good enough variety of food to feed a picky vegetarian. Our only issues were we were pretty bored after three days so we were glad we did not choose to stay a full week. Yes there are excursions you can pay for and we did do a couple but the place is literally in the middle of nowhere. Another disappointment was the beach was not clear water. We usually travel to Mexico and expected a bit better of a beach. The beach was also rather buggy so after pulling some random fly out of my scalp I was just not into going to the beach anymore. If you plan to drive rent an suv, this is a must! The roads are so bad. Dirt roads. Would be a good place to go to relax and do nothing else for a few days. We travelled all over Costa Rica and I wouldnt go back. We did see some beautiful sights, mountains and volcanos and the rainforest but if you are looking for the beach do not go to this country for its beaches, at least not the Pacific Ocean side. They did do a beautiful job with the wedding ceremony, party was a bit difficult because of the language barrier (no meal choices, couldn’t do bridal party introductions) but our not picky friends were fine with that. They had a live violinist for the ceremony playing current slow songs which was a beautiful touch and a live jazz player playing Kenny G at dinner which was also great. Get the ocean view room with the jacuzzi on the balcony!
