DON'T STAY HERE--NOT WORTH THE COST OR HEALTH RISK
My wife got a very expensive case of food poisoning! We paid more than $1,100 (meals included) for one night to be right next to Machu Picchu, so we could get the most out of our visit. We ate lunch and dinner at the hotel, and my wife got very ill during the night. The hotel referred us to a local doctor, but refused to cover the $111.55 cost!

The "full" Machu Picchu
The Belmond is something that you do if you are going to Machu Picchu whether for a day or a season. If you don't do it, you will regret it! And don't forget the Hiram Bingham train back to Cuzco.

Belmond hotel chain is awesome.
We experienced trouble with the air-conditioning on the first night of our stay. The hotel manager was so gracious and upgraded us to the Presidential Suite. Needless-to-stay, we were overwhelmed with the second night of our way. Accolades to the staff.

Worth the Price
Like others, I initially balked at the price, thinking that even the Pentagon wouldn't think about charging this price for a room. However, if you can, I would recommend that you try it for the location, convenience and service. You are only steps away from the entrance to Machu Picchu and by being so close, you can easily visit the site on both the day of your arrival and the day of departure. We had sun on the first day and clouds and rain/drizzle on the second and seeing the site on both days showed different aspects that I am glad we didn't miss. They have a hot tub/Jacuzzi above the hotel on a hill that overlooks Machu Picchu while you soak your overworked muscles from climbing the never ending stairs around the site. There is a phone that contacts the bar so that you can sip a Pisco Sour or a Chilcano while enjoying your view. We had no option but to take the meals/drinks included price. This includes all non premium alcohol. The restaurant is nice and convenient. Although room size is adequate, the service is excellent. If your visit to Machu Picchu is to be a once in a lifetime visit, then you may wish to consider staying at the Belmond Sanctuary Lodge. You will not be disappointed.
