A great place on a budget.
Unless you're digging into some pretty scummy places (which I'm not willing to do), this is as cheap as it gets in downtown Toronto in the class of what I would say are nice hotels. Its location is amazing. You have all sorts of great places to eat and get coffee right across the street. The room was small but modern, clean, and had an incredible set of blackout shades on the windows that I can't say enough good things about. The AC works great. The bed and pillows were comfortable. The only thing I'd say which I admit is totally unreasonable considering it's a jazz hotel, is that on the weekends it kinda sucks to have the jazz music kick on at around 11am. I like to sleep in sometimes on the road, and the bass made that incredibly difficult as it pretty much goes all day into the night. The actual area downstairs with the music and bar was pretty awesome though once I got up to check it out. So I'd say if you're an early riser you have nothing to worry about, but if you're not, try and stay on the second floor as I read it's much less audible up there. All in all, I like this place just fine. The front desk people are super nice.

Fun and funky budget option
Hotel Rex is a cool little hotel above a jazz club right in the heart of downtown Toronto. The rooms are quite simple and some don't have a private bathroom. However, it's a perfect option for those on a budget who don't mind simplicity and a little jazz filtering through the halls. As a solo traveler, I'd definitely stay here again.

Great Location, Friendly Staff.
Great Location - walking distance to the subway. Very friendly and helpful staff. Simple breakfast was provided (tea/coffee, toast) with bacon and eggs / omelettes available to purchase (around CAD10) Bar downstairs was very loud. Discounted entry available to guests. Room was very cold - the additional comforter and heater did not suffice. WiFi was usable, but a bit slow. Floor was uneven and rooms were not serviced unless requested by placing a sign on the door.

it's Good
I personally don't care about floor space or personal bathrooms in a hotel room, so I was more than happy to trade those for a significantly lower price. The soundproofing was strong enough that in my room (215), I never heard any music from downstairs. I generally dislike paying as much I do for amenities I don't need, so The Rex suited me just fine. The WiFi being open and terrible was a pain, but it got me out of my hotel room and into town faster I guess.
