Perfect Stay in Mexico City
Absolutely wonderful would stay there again in a heartbeat - Excellent staff, housekeeping in particular were fantastic but the entire staff is first rate in my opinion. The metro is almost literally right outside the door,a main bus stop just on the other side of the block, there is a good bakery across the street, several very good street food vendors, a convenient store (actually 2 of them)a pharmacy and a sit down restuaraunt and bar all within a block. It IS a little hard to find if you take the metro from the airport and choose the wrong metro exit, and the tiny street is not well known even to locals, BUT I found out to ask for for La Prensa building which is right near it and more people know. The little kitchen is just enough, the beds are on the hard side but warm and comfy and everything is just kind of homey I will very likely stay here again next time I am in Mexico City and I recommend it to anyone. ONE word of caution - though when I was there one of the front desk people and the night security guard were pretty good in english, you will NOT hear much English in that area at ALL so at least bare minimum "survival Spanish" is highly recommended to increase the easiness of your time there and in that area of the city - it is NOT "touristy" at all - which is one more reason I really like it.

fantastic location
We were really pleased with Hotel Avilla. The price and location were great - especially for first time visitors to Mexico City. The little kitchenette was good for most of our needs and there was a little grocery store about two minutes away. TV reception was poor, though who watches TV on a sightseeing trip? The shower wasn't great but the towels were Hilton quality plushy! The only downside was that the street it is on is somewhat squalid. We always felt safe, though, and it was only about 100 feet to the hotel and its 24 hour concierge. Wifi was good and the staff were very professional and helpful. I would recommend this place to any budget conscious traveler.

Home away from home
The room we had in Avilla was not too different from a "studio" or "efficiency" apartment in which many middle-class people live in expensive cities such as New York City (and probably Mexico City too). The room was very spacious, with lots of windows, a decent set of furniture, as well as kitchen amenities (a full-size fridge, a small 2-burner gas stove, sink, a microwave, a and some kitchen utensils). The bathroom was fully functioning and easy to use, with cold and hot water available at all times (although the shower was of the kind where you had to wait a minute or two for the water temperature to be changed once you've turned the hot or cold faucet handle). We had a room on one of the upper floors, facing a major street (Puente Alvarado), with a good view but also more street noise (tolerable to us, but possibly disturbing to some). Most rooms in the building, however, face a small side street (Sombrereros), and hopefully have less street noise. Realistically, though, you could hardly avoid street noise at a location near the very center of Mexico city. The location was pretty good too, just a block from subway entrance (the Balderas & Paseo de la Reforma entrance of the Hidalgo Station), abd just a few blocks from the Alameda. There was a small grocery (Oxxo) next door, and plenty of vendors of Mexican food across the street, as well as a Chinese grocery 3 blocks to the west.

Okay stay
The room bed is a one small thin mattress extremely hard to sleep on. Two big walls are made of glass like huge windows the only down side to it its that you get alot of sun light in the morning. You car hear alot of traffic as early as 5am and since the press is right next to them you can ear alot of noise starting at 3:00 am. No air conditioner, not even a fan it gets hot.

"Value for your money"
This is the third time we stayed in this hotel due to its location (close to train station, bus, walking distance to Alameda Central, Bellas Artes, Torre Latino and other historical places). Our main purpose was a pilgrimage to Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine and this hotel is 15 minutes by bus to the Shrine. The hotel is clean, 24 hour security staff. The only drawback is no airconditioning but guests can request for an electric fan and if you travel outside summertime, it is nice and comfortable. We feel we got our money's worth!
