An A+ Art and Spanish Architecture Gallery
The Gallery Inn is aptly named: it's an art gallery hotel. 400 year old buildings with twisting and turning staircases leading to rooms in every nook and cranny surrounding lush tropical gardens in old Spanish courtyards, arched windows and doorways, antiques, sculptures, a relaxing hidden swimming pool, frogs that chirp, and...I could go on. The owner, Jan, has loved this corner of Old San Juan for 40+ years and it shows. She's fascinating to talk to and her birds--parrots, a cockatoo, a macaw, and an African gray--are both beautiful and just fun to watch. Anytime we are in Old San Juan we will stay at the Gallery Inn

A hidden colonial gem with one caveat
The hotel is absolutely gorgeous. It has the colonial charm characteristic of Old San Juan. Such a hidden gem, as once you enter the premises, you can get lost in their nooks and crannies. This hotel will take you back in time. The rooms are beautiful and though they are clean, they are not hospital corners clean. We were fine with that but recognize that others may not. The only caveat and super downer for us was that we initially stayed in a room across from La Perla on a Saturday and they were blasting music until past 2 am. At 2 am, I requested a change of room and they took us to the far end of the hotel to a majestic room we intend to stay in next time. The sad part if that most rooms with ocean view face La Perla, which is not a bad thing except for the fact that there's zero way to mute the sound during these parties and the hotel can't control them. Maybe invest in sound-proof windows or curtains in the future? They get extra points for immediately moving us to another room when it was clear the party interrupted our sleep.

The Perfect Choice for a Unique Experience!
I cannot imagine a better place to stay in San Juan! The location of the Gallery Inn is PERFECT...from the scenic view overlooking the ocean, to the proximity to all of the narrow streets of Old San Juan, to the historic forts just down the sidewalk in both directions! The room that I stayed in (named the Brown Room) was unique and very comfortable. Please don't forget that the building and rooms are over 300 years old, so there are minor things that you aren't going to find in a typical chain brand hotel...but that's what makes this place so interesting and perfect! The hotel is like a maze that has new things to look at and discover around every corner...literally. I had a blast just standing and looking at the centuries old structure and items in it. The biggest and most pleasant surprise, is that the air conditioning in my room was AWESOME...after walking around in the hot sun, it was so nice to come back to a room that was as cold as I like it...I was able to keep it at a steady 64 degrees, which made my sleep SO comfortable. The room itself was very quiet, comfortable, and overall, perfect for the experience of old San Juan.

Don't walk; RUN from this property!!!!
Grossly overpriced and over-hyped; very poorly maintained. It is unkempt, with no screens on the windows, leaks in the ceiling and dust and cobwebs everywhere. The staff is not receptive and the "breakfast" consists of reheated Puerto Rican bread that can be purchased at Wal-Mart. I wrote to the hotel about the multiple leaks and the lack of retrofitted screens on the windows (Puerto Rico currently has 500+ cases of Zika!). I also asked them to kindly abate my room charges since I spent most of the night sopping up water running down the walls from the windows in both the bedroom and bathroom. I got ZERO response, so I feel obligated to post this information to unsuspecting travelers. The hotel's "charm" consists of a poorly aged building with lost of leaks, lots of dust and lots of dirty laundry bags full of dirty sheets. The self serve bar charges $20 for a glass of wine and a vodka and Cranberry that get "served" by a bartender who controls the portion to about .5 ounce. If it rains during your stay, you will be navigating a lot of puddles and standing water (a breeding ground for mosquitoes) as you try to safely reach one of the narrow staircases that lead to your poorly maintained room. When I went to check out and report the leaks (no one answered the phone during the night), the girl literally pulled out a LIST of rooms with water leaks to add my complaint to.
