good value, nice staff
It is near the river, which is a nice place to walk during the day or evening. It is near shopping (across the river, two bridges away) and food. The neighborhood looks a little dicy, but was actually fine, based on our experience.

nice hotel
The hotel is close to the train station, which can be positive or negative. If you come or leave by train, it's a pro. If not, it's a con. The area is just not that appealing. Very friendly service. Both, at checkin and at the breakfast. The room was ok, not great but definitely fine for a night. I was looking for low cost, so I didn't expect any luxury. Breakfast buffet was good. Boil the egg before cracking it (or, at least, read the sign that tells you to do so). Internet is rather slow.

Convenient and reasonable hotel in Salzburg
Hotel-Pension Alderhof was convenient to the train station and the center of Salzburg. The staff were very helpful with advice, suggestions, and information on things to do and see in Salzburg. The room is rather small by U.S. standards but perfectly acceptable by European standards. There is no air conditioning if the weather is hot but a fan provided in the room was adequate for sleeping. The shower stall is rather compact and may present problems for larger individuals but was adequate for my wife and myself. The hotel is on a side street and is quiet. It's within walking distance to the Centrum and most tourist attractions. We would definitely consider staying at this hotel if in Salzburg.

The good: Reception was extremely friendly! The lobby had toys and books for kids, which was wonderful. Breakfast didn't have a ton of choices (bread, meat, cheese, muesli, coffee, tea, juice, fruit), but it was tasty and filling. The location is pretty convenient--about 5 minutes from the main train station, and a long but pleasant walk (or 15-minute bus ride) to the main city attractions. The family room had ample space for my family (2 adults and 3 children 5 and under). The bad: The rooms weren't very clean (the shower door was full of calcium deposits and there was mildew on the ceiling). The noise from the street was very loud. The ORANGE curtains (not blackout curtains!) made it feel like 2 p.m. until the sun went down at almost 9 p.m. (devastating to kid bedtime routines!!!!). And the wifi was literally worse than nothing at all: Netflix was blocked, I had to reconnect to the network every 15 minutes, and even when it was working, it was painfully slow. I ended up just using my data because the wifi situation was so bad. Overall, it was fine. I didn't hate it, but I wouldn't stay there again. I felt like I overpaid--I got an economy budget hotel for a mid-range hotel price.
