Overall this was a good hotel. The only problem I encountered was that the wi-fi signal was fairly weak in my room, but it was probably the farthest room from the lobby, so I'm sure it was better in the other room.

Creaky and old with great customer service
The George is an old, creaky hotel with plenty of charm, but don't go expecting the mod cons. I spent nearly a week at the George. It's an easy 10-15 minute walk from the Colchester Town station, and a few yards from many buses. The pub is spacious and lovely, and there are a lot of choices for breakfast. As to the room, I'd booked a small en suite double, which was adequate with respect to size. However, I had absolutely no wifi connection. It was also incredibly hot when I was in Colchester, and unfortunately the floor fan in my room was broken. The front desk quickly replaced the fan and arranged for me to move to a room with better wifi. My next room had blazing wifi. It was facing the high street, so it was noisy with the windows open till about 10 pm. All in all, I'd Tahoe the creaky old George over a sterile Premier Inn any day.

Third time staying here. I chose it for location most of all and price second but my bed this time was horrible. Had to sleep on the duvet to keep the coils from killing me. Bathroom floor had hairs on it when I arrived.

Ancient and proud-still smiling.
The hotel staff was excellent. Efficient, knowledgeable, and sociable. The dining room floor needs work, looks scruffy! The food was mediocre, and the scrambled eggs smelled and tasted like fish. The service was excellent. I loved the old building but the overstuffed furniture was a bit ragged. I love being able to order food and eat it in the lounging areas. Thank you.

lets be fair.
4 star this place is not. Entrance is shaby by any standards..and can not believe a room could be that small, however furnishings where very nice and comfortable, top floor carrying bags was a stress test. Staff did their best and the waitress in the dinning room was a delight, in all value quite good
