Great value in an excellent location
A very "basic" older property like the ones I frequented in the 1980s. That said, the hotel provided all the creature comforts (including black-out drapes) and I had great corner old style balcony room with views of the nearby "happening" square. If your looking for "cool" or "glitz", this is not for you. Room Mate Oscar is right across the street is you want to stay with all the "cool kids" and "glamour gays." If you want great value in an excellent location with simple but comfortable accomodations and a very helpful staff, give it a shot!

RUN
This hotel must have been last remolded in the 1970s. The room, sheets, towels, bathroom, and bed were all old. The hotel is on a rather busy side road that leads to a lot of bars and restaurants. That can be great if you want to eat or drink but trying to sleep before 5am is hard since it is so loud. To top it off after checking it I was told there was a small water leak on my floor and there would be a little fixing but shouldn’t be too much noise. At 9am I was wakened up with a jackhammer knocking down the walls and ceiling of the room next door. This went on until 7pm for two days. When I asked to be moved I was told there were no more rooms even though I know the hotel was not that full. The free internet kept going out. The shower was warm, but never hot. It got a little cold at night but the heat would not come on so the room was always cold. I would not stay here again and would tell anyone to run. Yes it’s cheap but I would pay a little more to get some place nicer and quieter.

Good budget hotel
This is a good budget non-chain European-style hotel. Obviously you're not going to have a Hilton-type experience here, but provided expectations are correctly set, it's quite satisfactory. Very central location, couple of minutes from the metro, Staff speak decent English. Room was clean and comfortable; hot water supply & pressure good. WiFi worked fine. Breakfast buffet was rather meager and expensive for what's offered, but that's often par for the course... I just went to a local bar for a coffee and croissant after the first day. Other reviewers have mentioned noise problems, but I was in a room at the back away from the street, and found it very quiet at night. All in all, pretty satisfactory. I expect I will stay again when I return to Madrid later next month.

OK stay for one night - good location
First, my partner and I were looking for a location that would allow us to walk a self-guided tour of some of the major sites of Madrid while only have one afternoon and evening before departing on an early morning flight . The San Lorenzo's location was perfect for that. Second, the hotel staff was friendly, but perhaps not as informed as desirable. We booked the airport shuttle that was advertised at the reception desk for a 6:45am pickup, which was the suggested time by the the hotel receptionist to make our 9:30am flight. But alas, the shuttle arrived at 6:20am and we missed it. It seems that the receptionist the night before was unaware that the shuttle only picked up at the San Lorenzo once per hour, and at 20minutes past the hour. We had to call a taxi for the airport. Lastly, the room we were assigned was very tiny with a double bed pushed against the wall, and the bathroom so small you could brush your teeth at the sink from the toilet. As we were in Madrid in August, air conditioning would certainly have been nice. While I would not likely choose the San Lorenzo again, particularly for a longer stay, it was adequate for our short time there.
