Derwent House Hotel - Guest house, Scarborough

A mixed bag
Derwent House faces Scarborough's north beach, not the gaudy south beach, but has some tasteful attractions. The walk between the beaches is short, but steep. It is located close to the castle ruins on the head separating both beaches and also St. Mary's church, where Anne Bronte is buried. The view is spectacular, but it is a significant walk down the cliff to the beach. Restaurants and shops are close-by. Our room, number 4, was reasonably sized and the view was worth paying more for. Still, we probably won’t stay there again. Everything seemed a bit dowdy and well worn, smelling damp and cold. Once we got a heater going, that improved. The bed was low, but comfortable. The bedding and towels smelled good. The bathroom was minute and quirky. Multiple signs gave instructions on getting hot water and what not to put in the “macerating” toilet; which sounds disgusting in theory and practice. Flushing produced a grinding sound. As water from the sink and shower go through the same system, there is a lot of grinding; unpleasant during the day and sleep disturbing at night. The wifi was poor. There is no lift. The proprietress and her children were pleasant and helpful, breakfast was excellent, with a vegetarian full English option, location is great and the price was right, but overall, we’re not enthusiastic to revisit Derwent House. With a bit of an upgrade this could be a wonderful Scarborough hotel.

Great service and clean but tiny room.
The room was tiny. The breakfast was good. The service was great. The private bathroom on the landing was not ideal.

The hotel was lovely, the location was great, although parking was a struggle, when you have a trunk full of gear for comic con and two kids that's an issue, but the people were lovely, the room was roomy, well equipped and clean and the breakfast was good.
