Older Hotel, Lots of Dark Wood
I couldn't tell whether this hotel had old world charm or was just old. The room was spacious, parking was adequate, and it was walkable to The Strand bars and restaurants. I found it odd that there were couches in the hallways. I was also bothered by the fact that the only lock for the door was a push button in the handle, and the door didn't sit tight against the frame. It reminded me of my dorm room in college that could be entered with a credit card. I was also bothered that the front desk photocopied my ID (no other hotel in NZ has done this). There were no problems, and the room was clean, wifi good. I'm just a bit reluctant to give a super-enthusiastic endorsement.

Clean but dated
Clean and comfortable, but felt like a travel back in time. Nothing seems to have been touched since the 70s - the bed even had a TV remote control built into the bedside table!

A night in downtown Tauranga
Was a last minute booking and we very happy with the convenient location so handy to The Strand, restaurants and the theatre we walked to and from the evening we stayed. We enjoyed the very spacious room and the very comfortable bed!

Stay was ok. Staff were helpful and courteous. The location was an easy walk, less than 500m, to the restaurants and bars of the city centre. The left hand rail on stairs from the landing below the first floor to the ground floor was not aligned with the stairs and when combined with the dark carpet and subdued lighting, was hazardous. We were not told when we arrived that the pool was closed. The front of the toilet bowl in our room was at right angles to the door and close to the wall so it was difficult to use properly.

Tauranga Escape
Overnight escape visiting friends and family. Due to Hotels.com deal we were able to afford an upgrade to room with jetted bath and free breakfast the next morning. Staff were friendly and helpful and happy to help when we had any questions. Rooms were old but tidy and comfortable. We also had dinner in the Restaurant at the hotel. Standard Restaurant prices but well worth the money - very tasty. The free breakfast was the standard hotel buffet but again no complaints regarding the food. Overall our only complaint would have to be the toilet in the room. It is so close to the wall you struggle to sit down. Can't figure why they installed them that way.
