Good location, poor amenities
We stayed in a large Japanese style room. Room was unattractive with old scratched furniture. Wi-fi was very inconsistent and mostly didn't work. Staff spoke poor English. There was no electric pot for heating water for tea, and we were provided with one tea bag per person per day and a thermos of hot water. Room was quiet except for week-end evenings, and location was terrific, close to transportation, food, nightlife and shopping, but quiet and less commercial in atmosphere. Room was over- priced for what we got. We did not pay extra for the meals.

Great location in Central Kyoto
Hotel is in a great location near the Nishiki food market. Many restaurants and shopping nearby. Hotel is nice and comfortable and service was great. The people working at the front desk spoke good english so we didn't run into any issues there. Overall, a very good stay for my husband and I.

cigarette smoke
The big problem at this hotel is you will have cigarette smoke your room. I think that there is some kind of restaurant downstairs and all the smoke goes into the rooms. Thus one would not expect to deal with that problem for the price which is on the high side.

Excellent Ryokan
Excellent Ryokan. Well worth the experience. Be sure to do your homework on Japanese culture and Ryokans - use of slippers, tea ceremony, how to wear a Yukata, how to bathe in an Onsen. Very helpful staff - not everyone speaks English though. Great location - bang in the middle of Kyoto city.

Good location and experience
We enjoyed our stay at the Watazen. I wanted my family to experience a Ryokan but I knew that would be challenging with two small children ages 8 and 11 in tow. We really enjoyed the traditional experience of Watazen without the stress of having the kids follow too many rules. My only comment is the common area carpet is in poor condition. Everything else in the hotel is lovely so the stained carpet doesn't give a good first impression. I would recommend this hotel.
