Convenient location, dedicated staff
The hotel is a historic listed property, so it comes with all the issues of an old property that cannot be fixed (low water pressure, creaky floors). But the dedicated 5 star staff balances those issues out. The location is in the city center, so it is near to many restaurants and pubs - but be prepared for some noise from outside the hotel from customers exiting the pubs (or ask for a quiet room when checking in). Enjoy the cooked to order breakfasts in the restaurant.

Old and tired
This is an old hotel that needs some updating and renovation. The bed was comfortable, but the room was warm even in March. Without air conditioning it should be uncomfortable from May through September, even in the UK. The wifi was laughable, which would have been fine except that I could not connect to my iPhone hotspot inside the hotel. I am not sure what was going on, but it was impossible. The water pressure in the shower was insufficient and the hot water temperature in the sink never got warm.

defiantly not just a pub
When we booked 'The red Lion' we were expecting a pub, what a pleasant surprise, this is very much a hotel with 63 rooms and plenty of staff to help and make you welcome. There was a 'end of season' rugby club function on when we stayed but we were booked into a room that was away from any noise, this was done deliberately and was very much appreciated. The room was warm and well equipped but the décor could do with being spruced up a bit, the breakfast was good and there was a reasonable choice from the buffet (once you found out where the toaster was). the hotel was well situated in the centre of the town and within walking distance to the town. I would defiantly use this hotel again when staying in Basingstoke

Stop over in Basingstoke
Hotel is great for a short stay of business stop. Breakfast was excellent. Service was excellent too. For a one night stop over it was very good value for money.
