Its quaint and I often stay here whilst in Hamilton on business.
The Hotel said we had to pay $20 for over night parking when our reservation said we had free parking. Ended up parking on the street!! Gave me a room next to the vent with the big fans, the noise was very loud in the room. I asked for a different room, but was told me that they turn off the fan at 10:30 PM, so they didn't give me a different room. At the front desk they said they didn't have ice or anything to put it in. We felt like the Hotel didn't care if we were there or not.
The hotel is old and in need of updating. The driveway to the parking area desperately needs repair. The room was stuffy, so we had to open the windows. However, there are night clubs with loud live music right below. Between the music and the crowds spilling on to the street, it was VERY loud until about 3:20 am. Maybe good for 20 somethings that would be in the clubs, not good for us looking to sleep.
This hotel in best location was generally good! It is close to many restaurants and shops in downtown Hamilton, and you can enjoy a nice view of Waikato River by a couple of minutes walk. Its rooms are spacious, indeed. However, the heating system didn't work all right for the first couple of days, and ironically it took time to warm up my spacious room.
There was no air conditioning or internet I was in a room that was connected to another by a doorway which was so thin you couldn’t watch tv without disturbing the people in the vmnext room.
Good value accommodation. Room was spacious, WiFi worked fine, was fairly clean. Hotel could use some renovations (I think they’re undergoing them) and elevator not working, so lots of stairs due to high ceilings. Overall a great stay and would recommend!
Loved the size of the room and the amenities in the bathroom (jacuzzi tub & separate shower). Unfortunately, while we were there, the elevator was broken. The room service restaurant wouldn't provide room service because of this (we just wanted one bottle of wine - there is no convenient store that sells wine within a short walking distance and it was pouring rain). There is also no air conditioning and no screens on the windows, so we had to rely on two oscillating fans to cool down the large room, or open the screen-less windows during mosquito season.
It was nice tv was no signal and phone line was dead but bed was not bad
I got the queen bed overlooking the main road, Victoria Street. The property and staff were satisfactory, just a few items I would like to highlight. If you stay during the weekend, like we did, expect loud music and conversation from the restaurants and pubs downstairs. The hotel walls are paper thin, as well. We can clearly hear singing and conversation ouside our room and from adjacent rooms. Additionally parking tends to get full, so expect to park a block or more away from the hotel. Otherwise, convenient location amidst great restaurants and pubs and quick walk to Waikato Museum.
The VR Hamilton Hotel could be so awesome. It's an old historic building that has so much potential. Parking is an issue. You have to get a parking pass and their car parks are extremely small and hard to get in to. The windows are not sealed so not only are there drafts, but you can hear absolutely everything from the street - which includes the nightclubs down the street and the drunken revelers as they leave. The staff didn't tell us about needing a parking pass for our cars when we checked in so we parked in an available spot only to get told we needed to move - and then 2 follow up calls to our room to make sure we had done it. The staff was not overly helpful upon check in, check out, or when we were trying to find the restaurant. (There is a door in the lobby that says restaurant, but was locked and the desk staff watched us try to open it twice. And then we had to ask how we get to to the restaurant that their website says they have (for breakfast and lunch it's outside and to the left of the entry). Overall this could have been such a better hotel. Hamilton is not a huge city (but has a bunch of great restaurants all within walking distance) so I'm not sure there are many other games in town which is why they aren't putting much effort into service or upkeep.
