Former private house, then youth hostel, then Methodist guest house, now upscale hotel with spa. Lovely location, good facilities, though our room was cramped. It was the subject of a TV reality show a few years ago and the wait staff seem to be still playing to the cameras. Would prefer genuine warmth rather than exaggerated manners. We were stung by the difference between the menu in the room and the reality of an expensive three course fixed price in the dining room. We discovered too late that we could not have what turned out to be the bar meal in the comfort of the dining room. Be sure to make an informed choice.

Hotel set in a lovely position
Check in was good. Staff very friendly the room was lovely and clean with a comfortable king size bed. I think it had been modernised fairly recently. It’s set in lovely grounds and although sits on the road to Bowness it is pretty quiet. The reception and lounge area has lots of character and the drinks in the bar were reasonably priced. We didn’t have dinner there but ate breakfast which was very tasty and plentiful. We sat overlooking the large pond where the ducks like to be quire vocal and they fly up to the window for scraps of food. It appears they are extending the hotel on the back of the hotel. Some areas of the hotel could do with a revamp but all in all we enjoyed our stay and would go again. We didn’t use the leisure facilities as we were out and about.

Great value for money
For the money paid the hotel was excellent value for money. Yes it's a little bit tired in places but the extremely helpful staff and excellent food more than made up for that. The dog was made very welcome with special provision for us to take him down for breakfast with us each morning. Would definitely go back.

Stayed the penultimate week of August 2016. The hotel's decor is a little faded in places and redolent of the rooms I remember from my childhood holidays in the late 70s/early 80s, and I suppose that might put some people off a little. Not me - to be honest, the slight sense of nostalgia I got was rather nice. The breakfast was good; the staff universally friendly and helpful; the view from the breakfast room included visits from the ducks from the pond at the back of the hotel, which delighted all the children (including my 5 year old) and gave the older guests a smile. The swimming pool might - if being *really* picky - have perhaps been a couple of degrees warmer, but it was a good-sized pool. Didn't get the chance to use the gym facilities, but they looked fine; had the opportunity presented itself, I'd have liked to have sampled dinner at the hotel (based on the quality of breakfast), but the various trips around the area meant that it was easier to eat out. All in all, the base for a great holiday. I suppose the key question is 'would you stay there again?', and the answer is 'yes, without hesitation.'
