Beijing Sihe Courtyard Hotel, Beijing
I stayed at this lovely courtyard hotel during my recent Beijing visit. This hotel was the former home of the famed Beijing Opera Singer, Mei Lan Fan. The building is 400-years old and its architecture reflects that period. It is a charming place where you could imagine how the Mandarins lived back then. The hotel is located in a Hutong (alley), and can be difficult to locate if Beijing is new to you. It is located south of Dongsi subway station (Beijing Subway). You need to walk along Dongsi South St. after exiting the subway station. The Hutong is the 4th alley intersecting Dongsi South St. from Dongsi subway station. Turn left into that 4th alley (Deng Cao Hutong), and walk about 150m. There are 2 large red lanterns hanging above the hotel front entrance. The neighborhood is quaint, and quiet by 9 p,m, The housekeeping is excellent. This service is provided daily (no need to display "housekeeping needed" sign). My room has a relatively large bathroom which was nice. Laundry turnaround time is excellent. Many thanks to Zheng Li Hong who handled my laundry. The breakfast buffet is adquate. I enjoyed their pot-stickers and bean-paste buns. Freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee were available. Contrary to other reviews, I find it was easy to communicate in English with the front desk staff. Overall, I enjoyed my stay at this hotel. I do recommend it to adventurous travelers who prefer a unique cultural and historical experience.

Old world style in heart of modern city
I enjoyed most everything about it. We wanted to stay in one of the preserved hutongs in Beijing and it definitely delivered that nostalgic feeling. This place was a little tricky to find despite it's location being adequately described and highlighted in the 'getting here' feature. And, despite me personally having lived in Beijing before and speaking a moderate amount of Mandarin, none of the pedicab or taxi drivers cruising the neighborhood knew where this place was. Once we got there, the only other thing that was a bit irksome was them not having a single English channel on TV. This is the only place I have stayed at in the heart of a modern Chinese city that didn't have a single English channel. And considering I saw nothing but western travellers staying there, it makes even less sense
