The Chequers Hotel, Newbury
This hotel, although well maintained, is old. The staff were friendly and helpful. My room was clean and comfortable, but the floors sagged. You literally walked down hill and up hill to get to the bathroom. I placed a bottle of water on the dresser and watched it slide off onto the floor. This hotel has not changed much since I last stayed here in 1982. I'll will stay here again.

The Chequers Hotel, Newbury
This was one of the closest hotels to Highclere Castle, the purpose of our trip. Although everyone was very nice and helpful, it is one of the last coach inns from the 1700s. There are no elevators, and our room was on the top floor. Consequently, we were climbing a lot of stairs. The most annoying part of our stay were the VERY creaky floors. You could not step anywhere in the bedroom without the irritating creaks. The chef did a wonderful job with dinner. Breakfast was bountiful, too. We chose to add their breakfast and dinner package to our room reservation.

I will avoid statying here again if I can
Room was off the parking lot. Sings to find the room were not clear, so I ended up going round the carpark, and going thought the wrong door only to get some pigeons fly in my face. Room has dirty looking walls, the carpet looked old, the furniture was tired, the bathroom looked clean but also well used. It was a rainy, stormy evening, and I couldn't face going through the carpark to the restaurant so ordered room service. That's after I had to call reception from my mobile casue my room phone didn't work. Also had to call reception for a food menu which was missing from the room. I also requested a tv remote as somehow that was not in the room either. The food was less than mediocre, and more expensive that most of the local restaurants a few streets down the road. Service of the waiter who brought my menu and the lady who brought my food was good and friendly. However I had reception questioning how am I gonna pay for my room service! she literally asked me whether I will be paying with my card or now! I told her as a general rule I only ever have my cards on me which I use to pay for most things! how bizarre of a question?!

Great location and Value For Money
Great location and good value. Being done up at present and looks like they are doing a fine job. Being an old inn the floors in the annexe bedrooms make it noisy and you can hear activity in adjoining rooms and corridors. Will certainly stay again.
