Excellent customer service
The hotel staff was incredible and so accommodating that it made our stay very enjoyable. The rooms were very small and lack space for luggage. The bed between my friend and I was only several inches apart. Although extremely clean, there was no enclosed bathroom to change clothes if you had a roommate situation. The shower & tub was enclosed as well as the toilet. The other amenity lacking is the absence of coffee maker in the room. I understand that in Japan, they drink tea and that was available in the rooms, but most tourist need their coffee in the mornings. After staying in Tokyo prior to arriving in Kyoto, the difference was like night & day in terms of space. Overall, I would have rate this hotel very high in spite of the space due to the hospitality of the staff and general manager, Marion. She extended her services to make sure we were happy and taken care of.

A unexpected pleasure
The hotel staff couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. It's a beautiful hotel with spacious, lovely rooms. The food is delicious. Great location. Actually, it was the most well organized and pleasant hotel I've stayed at in years.

Great Location, Great Customer Service
Overall a great hotel and I would stay here again. We had room 504, facing the garden (away from the street, so very quiet). Spacious room and bathroom with a very nice soaking tub. We tried two of the hotel restaurants, "The Grill" and "Trattoria;" both were good. Friendly and helpful staff. Great location, right next door to a must-see temple, and a quick (5-7 minute) taxi ride to the heart of Kyoto's cultural sights. My only criticisms: (1) I expected some sort of "welcome basket" (fruit, snacks, juice, fresh flowers) especially for the type of room and rate that we paid (@ US$1,000/night). (2) The amenities (toiletries, and selection of snacks for purchase) were somewhat skimpy. We stayed at a Marriott in Osaka that had much more to offer for soaps, lotion, shampoo, toiletry kits, snacks/beverages to purchase. (3) The hallways and common areas are rather warm (we were here in mid-August). Nevertheless I would recommend this hotel, especially for couples. The spa looked wonderful and I wish we had one more day to try that out, perhaps next time.
