The Falstaff Hotel, Canterbury
Will not stay again
We were put in a room in an annex, rather than the hotel itself. There was NO porter, so we had to drag our own cases across the parking lot to the annex in the pouring rain and then drag them upstairs to our room. My mother is 84 and it was very difficult. The stair carpet was threadbare and slippery in places, but someone had put black masking tape on bits of it which gave a run-down sloppy impression. It was a safety hazard. Not having a porter is awful for a hotel of this supposed quality, especially since it's very old and has no elevators. The breakfast was nice except for the scrambled eggs which were overcooked and congealed each day. Would not stay here again. The best part of the stay was a lovely young man (pulled from the kitchen I believe) and affectionately known by hotel staff as "the machine", who came to our room and carried out cases down two sets of stairs when we departed. Very disappointing stay overall.

Excellent location for seeing old Canterbury, First floor was modernized, bar/ lounge and dining, outside rear terrace quiet and private. room was clean and well equipped, the floor boards were ancient and charming. The breakfast was very good and well served.

Well worn charm in Canterbury
The Falstaff is a charming, if a bit run down, place to stay. The bed was comfortable, but the furniture is worn and the carpet in the hallway needs to be replaced ASAP. It was very hard to find the car park. I had to stop and ask at a business. The breakfast was good.
