Luxurious but customer-service-challenged
My room was very luxurious. The only negatives are: 1) There is no gym in the hotel and 2) The customer service is lousy. From the moment we checked in, the people on staff had a weird, condescending, eye-rolling attitude. I don't need to be pampered by staff, but I at least want to be treated with respect. When my colleague asked if there was a gym in the hotel, the concierge looked at her like she was crazy. I was basically afraid to interact with the staff or ask them questions, which is not something you want in a hotel. They also totally messed up calling us a cab (it came and left without them calling up to our room to let us know it had arrived), which made us 45 minutes late for work. The staff needs basic training in customer service.

Malmaison room lighting is like a prison
The hotel advertises parking, however when we arrived we were told that the parking was full, and we had to park in a commercial car park. Biggest problem was that the lighting in the room was so dim that we needed to use a flashlight just to open the lock on our suitcase. The room seemed like a prison cell as far as the lighting. Totally unaccepatable.

Unique experience
Fun overnight stay in an old prison. Our room was one of the newly-refurbished ones and very comfortable. It did get a little warm overnight, and, being an ex-prison, it's not surprising you can't just open a window. One thing - parking is very limited, and when you book a room you also need to book a parking space at an additional cost - this isn't clear when making a reservation. The moment we drove into the hotel courtyard we were intercepted by a member of staff who was more interested in demanding of us whether we had reserved parking than he was in welcoming us to the hotel. As it happened, there were a couple of spaces available, but it wasn't the most welcome experience. Be aware also that the hotel hosts special events which seem to spill over into the (small) bar, and as is the habit of people attending special events, they tend to get that attitude of entitlement and don't have any interest in making room for other people (I'm looking at you, Scania Management Trainees). This isn't particularly the hotel's problem, but it is a little irritating when you're essentially confined to your room or the lobby. Oh - and no gym? That's a little odd nowadays.

Fantabulous hotel; best choice in Oxford
Having attended Oxford, I've stayed at various hotels in the city, and Mal is by far the best. Excellent location, fantastic grounds and decor, comfortable beds, next to several terrific restaurants. Atmospheric, unique, and super-fun. Nothing else even worth considering.

Lovely
The hotel is fantastic, excellent location and very friendly service. What happened to us was that the room was not ready for check in time and we have to wait half an hour , so until 3.30pm for check in. They gave us two complimentary drinks as compensation but when you are traveling and visiting as a tourist you prefer service over drinks. The hotel is lovely and I will choose it again. We have breakfast across at Art Cafe.
