I cannot recommend the Dolmen
The Dolmen is a tired hotel in a tacky tourist area. While the upgraded rooms have a nice view of the Mediterranean, there is really no reason to stay here. It would be a bit like staying at Coney Island years after its prime - lots of semi-naked tourists walking to and from the water with lots of kids and mediocre restaurants. The beach is rocky and awful. The hotel is not near any of the many interesting and historic sites and areas in Malta. Neither the lobby or the elevators have air conditioning which means that they can get really hot since it is well over 90 degrees in the summer. The elevators were particularly stifling. The AC in the room could not keep up with the outside temperature. The only reason I can think to come here is to pay for an upgraded room and sit on the patio and look at the water. But at some point you have to leave the room :) Malta is a really interesting island and there are better areas to stay.

Middle of the road stay
Our room seemed a bit unfinished. There were a couple of holes in the walls and the toilet leaked. On the plus side, the room was very spacious and the balcony had a nice view. The breakfasts and dinners were delicious with many options.

Destination Wedding
I travelled solo to Malta from Los Angeles to join a group of friends for a wedding. My trip was for the whole week, but a friend from London flew in on the day of and left a couple of days later – its that close to London! A long week end for most Europeans. The hotel grounds were lovely and the Wedding reception was held on the property. What a truly beautiful venue with lots of room for the tables and dancing by the water. Everyone raved about the food. Malta is a popolar wedding destination, so for anyone considering this venue – it is definitely a plus. I did no use the spa, but others did and were very pleased with the services offered. I did get the breakfast included plan and loved the selection as well as the lovely room with a view. The parents of young children found lots of choices from the menu and lots of activities by the four pools. During the day, I went on tours – a bus tour, a ferry trip of Gozo and a catamaran to the blue lagoon. All very reasonable and well worth it. Overall, this was a perfect vacation. I’m not sure if it was just that Malta is such a great destination or if the hotel location really played a part. However, despite the somewhat dated facilities, everything clicked for me, and I’m giving it full marks. PS – warning to those depending on the free Hotel internet – don’t. The service is unreliable and I got kicked off for hours. But it was a vacation, so who cares.
