Quirky, Peaceful, and Convenient
My room looked like a 19th-century log cabin, but the bed was soft and the grounds are lovely. Plenty of places to hang out outside. Wifi was a bit slow but worked. Incredibly convenient. I could run around town and then pop in to drop stuff off or rest. The staff was helpful. A unique Santa Fe institution.

Stylish and convenient
We were charmed by the traditional adobe-style architecture of the buildings and the room, especially the black and white tile in the bathroom. Our room faced a lovely, landscaped courtyard with a fountain. The purpose of our trip was to hike the Mt. Atalaya trailhead at St. John's College, and we were a few minutes away. Cerrillos Road not exactly picturesque or pedestrian friendly, but we were rewarded with excellent restaurants on the other side.

Classic Santa Fe
Love the El Rey! Really charming old school motel conveniently located on Cerillos. Spacious rooms, old school funky (in a good way) decor. I stayed in one of the rooms toward the back of the property and had a lovely patio. It was super quiet, no road noise at all.

Not my favorite
The room was quite large and there was nothing terribly wrong with it, but it just wasn't very appealing. The hotel is clearly quite old and had more of the vibe of the motels I stayed in when I was a child in the 60's rather than the modern hotels we've all become accustomed to. The floor was cold and hard ceramic tiles (the room was also cold, but entirely my fault since I didn't notice that I could have adjusted the thermostat), and the decor was rather dark. Other rooms might have been brighter and more modern according to pictures on the website, but the room we had looked rather tired and they had no others available. If the weather had been nicer, I might have liked the whole experience better since the patio table and other outdoor spaces were nice. The WiFi was extremely sketchy; mine was okay, but my husband could only get it for a few seconds and then it would switch off. The management said they are aware and will soon upgrade. Breakfast was just cinnamon buns or scones in the lobby (separate building), and although they were good, it wasn't the variety that one usually gets and there were just a few sofas to sit on; no tables. I guess it's meant to be taken back to your room. I thought the lobby looked better the in pictures than in person. The staff was nice, the bed was comfortable, the price reasonable, and the location was good. All in all, not horrible, but I didn't love it and wouldn't stay there again.
