Not as expected
While the front desk service was fine, on all other points the hotel was not as expected. The shuttle to the station is just once an hour, and to walk to a shopping area with restaurants is 15 minutes. Right around the hotel there's not much except the lake in terms of restaurants or shops tourists would visit (there is a grocery store about 5 minutes from the hotel). The building is outdated and needs renovation, particularly its air conditioning which never seemed cool enough even on the most powerful setting, and seemed to blow in stale tobacco odors from smoking rooms, as well as the carpets and upholstery which in my room had a lot of stains. The pool is quite large, but shallow at just 1 m depth. I got charged 1000 yen per use plus 500 yen for a deck chair, and the locker room facilities at the pool are very worn out. Even the lobby -- what you see in the photos is the coffee shop which charged 750 yen per cup of coffee. In reality there are not comfortable chairs in the lobby, instead a line-up of old red velvet victorian chairs. In short, the hotel needs renovation, and with that the stunning views of the lake could really be enjoyed.

The staff could not have been more helpful and friendly. We ran into trouble when we returned to the hotel just after the restaurants closed and we had two hungry kids with us. The staff went out of their way to help us out. We had a beautiful view of the lake from our room.

Excellent Value, Breathtaking Lake Views
Excellent value for modern hotel with breathtaking views of Lake Biwa. We chose the tatami room, so excellent for our family of four. Our rate included breakfast. You can go to one of four restaurants for breakfast. We chose the Japanese restaurant on the top floor. More beautiful views there. Traditional Japanese breakfast was best that we had during our trip. Convenient free shuttle bus to Otsu JR station which is just a few minutes ride to Kyoto station. I would love to return there someday.

A bit out of the way for me, nothing within convenient walking distance. Right on the lake though, so the view is nice. Has a free shuttle to and from Otsu station, though I can't recall how frequently it runs.

Great stay overall
The wonderful staff is probably the best thing about the Otsu Prince Hotel. They're friendly, attentive, and patient. The hotel itself is definitely older, although still opulent in some ways with its grand lobby and top floor lounge bar/restaurant. The view from our room of the lake was absolutely beautiful and worth staying a bit outside of Kyoto for. There really is not much of a neighborhood around the hotel, so if you want to go out at night, you'll need to rely on the free shuttle back to Otsu station. FYI: the shuttle stops running around 9:15 pm (21:15), so if you stay out later you'll need to take a taxi back (about 1500 Yen from Otsu Station).
