The owners should stay there undercover for a week
There are lots of little things that significantly undermine the experience that could make a big difference if someone paid attention to them. Firstly; there is huge variation in the rooms, even those classified as "superior". Greater transparency (eg: size of room and of bed) would be helpful (our first big room had a "king" that was actually two beds joined together with an uncomfortable ridge in the middle. Our second had a bad sewage smell. Our third was small with a double bed but was quiet with no smell, yet apparently went for the same rate. Really?!). Secondly; the soundproofing is non-existent in adjoining rooms (literally, you can hear the neighbor's conversations, never mind the all-night cries of their distressed infants). It would be helpful if more care could be given to placing likely noiser guests where they are not so impactful on their neighbors. Thirdly; housekeeping was inconsistent; on several days our coffee/tea and toiletries (shampoo etc) were not replenished. Fourthly; breakfast was poor. Do you really have to use powdered eggs? YUCK. Fifthly; what is with the gym? It's apparently a leisure center that people pay to join, yet both treadmills were out of order (and apparently have been for some time); the jacuzzi was lukewarm while the sauna was 120 degrees and badly designed (the temperature gauge burned me on the back as I stood up ... it should be placed elsewhere), and the showers suck. Sort all these out and this would be a half-decent hotel.

Luke warm
Old building very beautiful. No ac, very uncomfortable. Inattentive staff. They seem far more interested in wedding catering than guests. This hotel has great potential. Lack luster in a great setting. More pride and enthusiasm needed for this place. First time back in UK in 3 years, reaffirms my decision to leave. I wanted this place to be my Great Britain. In the end I settled for a soulless vacant residence in need of some creative enthusiastic minds.

Not worth staying overnight
My wife and I stayed 12 nights. We've visited the UK every year since 2010. This is the worst place we have stayed. Positives & Negatives: (+) Very nice building to visit during the day (SPA facilities, perhaps the golf course, a meal, a walk around outside). Staff were very pleasant. (-) Extremely noisy at night (the hotel is used for private parties with very load music until the early hours). (-) Noisy from room next door all night (had a locked adjoining door). (-) No control over the heating (opening windows meant lots of noise from groups of smokers outside the public bar until early hours).

A unique English country hotel
The grounds of the Selsdon Park Hotel are beautiful and we enjoyed some nice walks. We had a nice large modern room, though a long way from reception with stairs up and down - it is a labyrinth of a hotel but that's part of the fun. Sometimes service can be quite slow, so don't be in a hurry (a sandwich at the bar took a really long time). Food was basically good for dinner and the ample breakfast buffet, but the taste of the ham, sausage and mushrooms was a little stronger than I prefer, so try them out first. The basic "grand hotel" experience always feels worth while compared to standard lodging, and the shuttle driver was very accommodating even though it doesn't run all the time (to East Croydon station 10-15 minutes away). You'll need to call if arriving and ask when you are there.
