Great location.
First time in China. It is a great location for a hotel. We easily got to know our way around. Unfriendliest front desk staff I have ever met and this may be my 200+ hotel booked from this site. Guess this may in part be due to this being China. Many of the locals were very friendly. But not the hotel front desk. The door men are very nice and helpful and they actually smile. The young lady working the coffee shop was also very nice. (Selling a Cappuchino for $8.20 or 42 CNY... Omg!!! I guess being Canadian I come to expect a certain standard of friendliness. That being said,I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat. The scooters have to run of the place in Shanghai, mostly electric so they will sneak up on you on the sidewalks. Careful.

Good value for the area
The hotel was close to the Bund, so the location was great. The overall condition of the hotel was nice as well, although the beds were very firm, so not my preference but great for others. I noticed the wall paper was in need of replacing in my room, and the shower could use some updating, as it looked tired and the shower head was a bit plugged with calcium. Overall, it was a good experience and I would stay here again.

Bad experience at a decent hotel
The Bund Riverside hotel itself was fairly fine and in a decent area. However, I gave it a low rating because: 1. My first night there, I received a wakeup call at 5AM. I had not asked for a wakeup call and was therefore not excited to receive one. 2. I needed to unexpectedly make an international call. I followed the instructions on how to do so left in the room but was consistently unable to connect. I therefore called the front desk for help whereupon they told me to follow the instructions left in the room and hung up. In the end, I was unable to ever make the international call. 3. Repair work was being done on the hotel and I was able to hear consistent pounding and construction noises fairly early in the morning (around 6AM) which made sleep difficult. 4. The Hotels.com site for this hotel indicated that there was a breakfast available but I'm unsure if that's true. Overall, the room itself was quite nice and large. Its decorations were a bit sparse but not in a way that would make me think negatively of the place. It's relatively easy to walk from this hotel to most anywhere that you'd want to go. As outlined above, I had a bad experience with this hotel and do not plan on returning.
