Olissippo Castelo, Lisbon

A surprising hotel in a funky area.
The Olissippo Castello is perched on the steep hill directly under the large Castello on one of Lisbon's seven hills. It is not particularly near to the typical Old City sights which tend to be nearer to the shoreline or the center of the historic district, but it doesn't really matter. The best way to sample Lisbon is to walk its neighborhoods to find parks, churches, cafes and funny shops, and the Olissippo Castello is a fine place to start. There is a tram that comes within a block or so, and a precipitous 15 minute walk to a main square where you can catch busses and other trams. The room we had, a deluxe double, was HUGE with a king-sized bed, a large sitting area, a gorgeous bathroom and an enormous private patio overlooking the city. It came with a large breakfast buffet which had a large selection of fruit, cereals, breads/pastries, scrambled eggs, queso fresco, Iberian ham, fresh orange juice plus coffee and tea, all freshly prepared and delicious. The people at the front desk, particularly Luis, were so helpful, friendly and concerned that we had a chance to experience the best of Lisbon despite our time constraints. They took time and care so we could make the most of our trip and we'd definitely go back. A caution: If you have a hard time climbing steep streets or taking long walks, this hotel - and really, the old part of this city - may not be a good choice for you. Better to stay outside the old part and take cabs to specific attractions.

Smaller chains do it best!
Smaller 1st rate hotels do it best! I could not have been more pleased. The rooms are very above normal in quality and size - lots of room! The breakfast was much better than the norm (food freshly prepared, high quality and actually tasty! I had to force myself NOT to overeat! Lisbon is so extremely hilly! So much to see (requires a minimum 6 day stay! One needs the energy. Best of all: staff were friendly, helpful and actually seemed happy to help with the littlest of needs. I love this chain!

Loved It
We loved our spacious room with terrace and view. We walked everywhere though the terrain in Lisbon includes steep hills so location might not be walkable for everyone. Those hills are tough but the views and ambience are very rewarding.

The hotel room was nicely appointed. Room service was prompt. Our view of the city was lovely and it was a short walk to pick up transportation and tours.
